LIHU‘E — A pair of Kauaians have come forward, willing to serve as volunteers on the state’s Kaua‘i/Ni‘ihau Island Burial Council, state officials confirmed Thursday.
Gov. Linda Lingle appointed two new members as interim members until confirmed by the state Legislature in the 2010 session that begins in mid-January, said Deborah Ward, spokesperson for the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.
Letters have been sent out to the two new members, who will bring the council to the minimum of nine required for a quorum.
Their names have not yet been released, but should be shortly, Ward said in an e-mail.
Administratively, the various island burial councils are under the DLNR Historic Preservation Division, and are charged with addressing concerns relating to Native Hawaiian burial sites.
The next KNIBC meeting is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 8, at a time and place to be determined soon, she said.
An agenda for the meeting isn’t required to be posted until a week before the meeting.
The two new members will join the seven current burial council members: Chair Clisson Kunane Aipoalani (whose term expires June 30, 2010), Vice Chair Keith Yap (June 30, 2012), Dee M. Crowell (June 30, 2010), Michael Loo (June 30, 2012), Sandra P. Quinsaat (June 30, 2012), Leiana P. Robinson (June 30, 2011) and Barbara J. Say (June 30, 2011).
Once confirmed, the new members’ terms will expire June 30, 2013.
The council has not met since June, when the terms of former members John Kruse and Presley Wann expired, due to lack of a quorum.
