LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i horseshoe pitchers pulled in a dozen trophies, including the 2009 Men State Champion and the 2009 Junior State Champion over the weekend.
Kaua‘i fielded 21 horseshoe pitchers at the two-day 20th Annual Hawai‘i State Horseshoe Pitchers’ Association State Singles Championships in Anahola.
Myrtlemay Kamoku said a total of 53 horseshoe players from around the state vied for the state championship title.
Following the opening night stew and rice dinner, players broke into class play in seven classes.
The Kamoku family pulled in the two big titles for Kaua‘i when Myron Kamoku earned the 2009 Men State Champion and Wylan Kamoku walked off with the 2009 Junior State Champion awards. Daniel Denny of Kapa‘a finished as the 2009 Elder’s Two Champion.
Kaua‘i horseshoe pitchers also showed strong by taking top honors in Class C, Class E, and Class F.
Ed Constantine from Kaua‘i’s North Shore topped the Class C, followed by Apela Hokoana of Pearl City and Kim Lindsteadt, also of Kaua‘i’s North Shore.
Noah Texeira from Kilauea topped Class E, followed by Wylan Kamoku, the eventual 2009 Junior State Champion, and Cindy Lund, also of Kilauea.
Kenny Lum of Kaua‘i’s North Shore topped Class F, followed by Anahola’s Kimo Reis and Mike Montgomery of Barber’s Point on O‘ahu.
Toby Searles from Kaua‘i’s North Shore fell to Dominiokl Martinez of Pearl City, and Darlene Calles of Hilo filled in the third berth of Class G.
Myron Kamoku was defeated by Katie Reis of Waimanalo in the Class B competition.
Another O‘ahu player, Janette Yu of Waianae, topped the Class D followed by Reggie Gomes from Kailua, Kona, and Roland Kauweloa of Waianae.
Enrique Madrae of the Big Island topped the Class A followed by Linda Taketa of Kailua, Kona, and Phyllis Onizuka of Waimanalo. Madrae also finished as the 2009 Elder’s One Champion.
Lynn Carson, another Waimanalo player, finished as the 2009 Woman State Champion, and Samuel Lum, also of Waimanalo, walked off with the 2009 Senior Men Champion trophy.
The singles tournament was sanctioned by the Hawai‘i State Horseshoe Pitching Association and governed by the National Horseshoe Pitchers’ Association.
