Wataru Hiranaka
Wataru “Watson” Hiranaka of Lihu‘e died Aug. 26, 2009, at Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital at age 98. Born on Dec. 29, 1910, in Lihu‘e, he was part owner of Hiranaka Builders.
He was preceded in death by his brothers Noboru, Mamoru, Iwao and Yoshio Hiranaka.
He is survived by his wife Kazue Hiranaka; son Dennis (Karen) Hiranaka of Lihu‘e; daughter Nancy Omori of Fresno, Calif.; brother Isamu (Yoshino) Hiranaka; sisters Sumiyo Kato, Haruko Hiranaka and Setsuko Hiranaka of Lihu‘e; two grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
Private services were held.
Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home assisted the Hiranaka family with the arrangements.
Shirley Steed
Shirley Harada Steed of Columbia died at age 74. She was born on Gay and Robinson Sugar Plantation in Kaua‘i and was the dietitian at Columbia Bible College.
She was preceded in death by her parents Masao and Yachiyo Matsumoto Harada, sister Geraldine Harada and stepfather Hiroki Imamura.
She is survived by her husband Richard W. Steed of Columbia; son Richard M. Steed of Chapel Hill, N.C. and Joel (Beverly) Steed of Plainview, Texas; daughter Pauline Wray of Cayce; brother Gordon (Sandra) Harada of Waimea, Hawai‘i; friend Michelle Ponticello of Pittsboro, N.C and seven grandchildren.
Visitation from 6-8 p.m., on Friday, Sept. 4, at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel. A graveside service will be at 10 a.m., on Saturday, Sept. 5, at Elmwood Cemetery. Memorial service to follow at 11 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church.

Jennie Pereira
Jennie “Loke” Pereira of Anahola died Aug. 19, 2009, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at age 76. She was born on Aug. 14, 1933, in Moloa‘a.
She was preceded in death by her son Philomen, sisters Kau’i and Katherine, and brother Christian.
She is survived by her husband Charles “Blake” Pereira; daughters Cheryle (Victor) Punua and Gloria Rafael; grandchildren Keialohi, Kawehi (Russell) Beckett, Kaimana, Blake Rafael, Kanani (Kia‘aina) Velasco; great grandchildren Victoria and Kamakau Beckett, Kalahikiola and Kia‘aina Velasco; brother Castro Sonny (Irene) Lovell; sisters Diane O’Riley, Priscilla (Mike) Magallanes and Alvina Mills; numerous nieces, nephew, cousins and friends.
A celebration of her life will be on Saturday, Sept. 5, at Koolauhui‘ia Protestant Church in Anahola. Visitation from 9 to 11 a.m., service at 11 a.m. Inurnment will be on Friday, Sept. 11, at 1 p.m., at Punch Bowl Cemetery.
Makakekoa Cristobal
Makakekoa Cristobal died Aug. 28, 2009, in Orem, Utah, at age 1. He was born on Jan. 15, 2008.
He was preceded in death by his paternal great-grandfather Arsenio Cristobal of ‘Ele‘ele.
Maka is survived by his parents Lydell M. and Destiny (Delgado) Cristobal of Orem, Utah; paternal grandparents Lydell “Steve” and Laura Cristobal of Lihu‘e; grandmother Michele Muller of Indiana; great-grandparents Fausta Cristobal of ‘Ele‘ele and Patrick and Carol Medeiros of Lihu‘e; uncle Sean Cristobal; aunty Nicole Cristobal; numerous aunties, uncles, cousins and friends.
A private service will be held on Thursday, Sept. 3, in Orem, Utah.
