PRINCEVILLE — Last fall Monika Mira, author of “The Complete Hawaiian Reef Fish Coloring Book” gave a presentation on the Hawaiian reef for the adult speaker program at Princeville Library. Impressed by her knowledge and expertise, she was invited to adapt her presentation for the children’s Saturday morning Keiki Story Time.
On August 15, 20 children and 10 adults attended for a lecture describing the Hawaiian reef and its fragile state. Mira explained how the coral is a living animal and how necessary it is for the keiki to be very careful not to disturb or damage the living system when they’re at the beach.
After showing them several pictures of fish and coral that live in the reef around the Hawaiian Islands, Mira encouraged each child to pick a fish to draw so they could create and decorate their own reef. After coloring their drawings and cutting out seaweed shapes, they pasted them on the “reef wall.”
Once the reef wall was complete, a drawing was held to select two winners. The lucky recipients were Nathan Gardner of Hanalei and Emily Page Van Der Swaag of Simi Valley, Calif. Each won a copy of the presenter’s coloring book.
The Princeville Library presents a keiki story time at 10:30 a.m. Saturdays. Children (and their parents) from pre-school to third grade are invited to attend. Volunteer readers are always welcome. To become a reader call, Jennifer Relacion, 826 4310.
Friends at the North Shore Library at Princeville is the local chapter of Friends of the Library of Hawai‘i, an active group of library users and advocates who for years have supported Hawai‘i’s public libraries through legislative testimony and funding for programs, equipment and staff training.
The group’s efforts began even before the opening of the North Shore library in 1999.
