Aimee Iwamoto, a swimmer out of the Pearl City Aquatics, finished the Mokihana Aquatics Fun Meet with not one, but two new state records, said Orlando “O” Anaya, coach of the hosting swim club.
Saturday night, Anaya confirmed the new state record set by Iwamoto in the Girls 50 Breaststroke, and added a new state record in the Girls 100 Breaststroke.
“Aimee actually broke two records,” Anaya said in an e-mail Saturday night, following confirmation of the record times. “We all know about the 50 Breaststroke record, but we were not sure about the 100 Breaststroke record because it was done in an Open event.”
Anaya said following the meet, the officials reviewed the records rules and discovered that Iwamoto was eligible for the 100 Breaststroke record.
Iwamoto broke her own record on the first day of the meet at the Waimea pool with a record-setting 33.80 swim to better her own record for the event at 33.83 entering the water.
Iwamoto’s second record in the 100 Breaststroke also came on the first day of the meet where she finished the event at 1:12.37, bettering her seeded time of 1:14.26. That swim was better than the record held by Kaylan Baker who did the event at 1:14.36.
Anaya said he would like to extend his congratulations to Iwamoto on the achievement, and added that it was through the tremendous support of the Fun Meet ‘09 parents and volunteers that these records were set on Kaua‘i.
Swim Kaua‘i Aquatics will host its second annual Kaua‘i Classic event on Aug. 29-30 at the YMCA Pool in Puhi.
Warmups for the age group swim starts at 7:30 a.m. on both days with the swim sessions beginning at 9 a.m.
