LIHU‘E — Key blocks by Loxley Keala and Alissa Youart locked up one of the top spots for the Iolani Red Raiders, Friday night.
Newport Harbor Sailor Kirby Burnham delivered a solid kill down the right side to seal their match against a tenacious Maryknoll Spartan team at the second day of the 8th Annual Kaua‘i Challenge Invitational Volleyball Tournament at the Kaua‘i High School gym.
The late-game blocks by the Red Raiders sealed a 28-26, 25-21 win over the Troy High School Warriors and improved Iolani to a 3-0 record for Friday’s play. Overall, Iolani sits at the top of its division with a 6-1 record while Troy, finishing Friday play at 2-1, is 4-2 overall for the second seed.
In the second division being played at Kaua‘i High School, the Sailors finished Friday play 3-0 with its final 25-16, 25-22 win over the Maryknoll Spartans to earn the top seed in its division.
Overall, the Sailors finish with an undefeated 6-0 record over two days while Maryknoll ends Friday play 2-1 and 4-2 overall for the second seed.
Candice Poloa, former Kaua‘i High School volleyball player who is helping tournament director Shelton Tang with the scorekeeping chores, said Iolani, Troy, Newport Harbor and Maryknoll will return to Kaua‘i High School gym for the final round that starts at 8 a.m. today (Sat).
These four teams will be joined by four teams from the Island School site, that, at press time, had not reported in completely.
With just three of its six games reported, the Huntington Beach Oilers had a 2-0 standing with one game remaining for an overall 4-0 record. The Oilers were followed by Iolani Black that had a 1-1 record, Friday, for an overall 2-3 record with one game each remaining. La Reina and Oak Park, the other two teams in that division were 0-1 on the day, La Reina sporting a 1-2 overall record while Oak Park was at 0-2.
Huntington Beach improved to its 2-0 standing by defeating Iolani Black, 25-12, 25-16, and its final game was scheduled against La Reina, which earlier dropped to Iolani Black in three sets, 25-17, 21-25, 13-15.

The second division at Island School was too close to call as Palos Verdes and Waiakea were both 1-1 after three games reported. Waiakea had the overall lead in that division with a 2-2 record followed by Palos Verdes with a 2-3 overall standing.
Palos Verdes dropped to Waiakea 20-25, 21-25 after getting past St. Andrews in three sets, 18-25, 25-23, 15-9. Its final game was scheduled against Lovejoy, which had defeated Waiakea 26-24, 25-19.
Lovejoy was 1-0 with a 2-0 overall record followed by St. Andres with an 0-1 Friday and a 1-2 overall standing.
The division championship for the Po‘okela — Champion and Exceptional, division is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. at the Kaua‘i High School gym.
Three other divisions will also be playing at the Island School, Kapa‘a High School and Waimea High School starting at 8 a.m.
