KAPA‘A — “They’ve got a little wear, but nothing noticeable,” said Dave Greenberg of Kaua‘i Music and Sound, Wednesday afternoon. “And, they’ve got warranty.”
Greenberg said the music shop across from the Kapa‘a Chevron celebrated its first year in business this weekend, and part of the offering was instruments, stands and accessories that were used in the sold-out Kaua‘i Music Festival last week at the Hilton Kaua‘i Beach Resort.
The public was invited to inspect and take advantage of special pricing for these instruments.
Anniversary festivities continue through Sunday evening, with live entertainment in a kanikapila style, Greenberg said.
“On Sunday, we open at noon and will have two bands with the rest of the afternoon being open mic,” the shop’s owner said. “Normally, we’re closed on Sundays, but we’re opening for the anniversary.”
Greenberg said the shop will also be clearing out some of its rental returns as well as selected lines.
“This is a great time for people to shop because they can get pro model instruments for entry-level prices,” he said. “Discounts will be from 33 to 50 percent on a lot of items, including amplifiers and electric guitar models.”
One of the examples is an Art & Lutherie guitar that is handmade in Canada that will be selling at a reduced price.
After purchasing the building, Greenberg moved here from the Mainland to keep the music shop alive in the Kapa‘a area.
“It’s been a terrific year,” he said. “We’ve had tremendous support from the community, and I cannot believe that on Aug. 8, we’ve been here exactly one year.”
During that time, Greenberg said ‘ukulele sales have been brisk.
“We get a lot of entry-level sales from middle-school students, but what has been amazing is that our handmade and custom models have been selling almost faster than Ray Rapozo can make them,” Greenberg said. “This is a good problem. The sad thing is that there are not that many to look at during the anniversary celebration.”
He noted that sales of the handmade instruments have been equal between local residents looking to pick up a Rapozo, and visitors who want a quality instrument to bring home.
Kaua‘i Sound & Music will be hosting its annual Band Day with the Kapa‘a Middle School later this month.
“During that time when parents can come in and inspect instruments, we’ll have a good offering of trumpets, trombones and clarinets,” Greenberg said. “We’re definitely a full-line music store.”
