PUHI — A flu outbreak has led to the temporary closure of the Kaua‘i Community College Early Childhood Development Center daycare facility, KCC Chancellor Helen Cox said.
After five children and one staff member developed flu-like symptoms, the decision was made to close the center, which currently has the maximum of 20 youngsters enrolled, Cox said in a telephone interview Wednesday morning.
Cox said several of those out with flu-like symptoms tested positive for Influenza A. Tests were not done to check for swine flu, or H1N1 Influenza A.
The center closed Wednesday and will reopen Aug. 10. In the meantime, center and KCC staff will “thoroughly disinfect the center,” Cox said.
Parents with children at the center will either be given refunds for the time the center is closed, or will be able to apply payments already made toward future time at the center, she said.
Chuck Ramsey, KCC vice chancellor for academic affairs, said there is a priority system in place for children at the center, with children of full-time KCC students getting first priority, children of full-time KCC staff with second priority, children of part-time students getting third priority, and members of the community in general getting fourth priority.
In the spring semester this year, there were eight children whose parents were from the general island community, he said.
“The mix can vary,” Ramsey said.
The center is always filled to capacity, Cox said.
