LIHU‘E — Despite a strong defensive showing from the Kilauea Hui, Jayme Jacinto broke through for 10 points to lead Pop It to a 24-18 edge over the Hui, Friday.
Playing in the Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association, Kapua Chandler finished with six points to lead the Hui effort at the Kaua‘i High School gym.
Kierra Barba, who graduated Waimea High School in June, and Rachael Taira, home from college for the summer, teamed for 14 points to lead F-N-G to a 30-25 win over Wailua in the second of two Girls 18 and Over matches played at the Raiderdome.
Barba finished with eight points and Taira lent six points to the victory.
Chelsie Villatora and Kelsey Cadiente each netted six points to spearhead the Wailua effort.
Karen Matsumoto, a coordinator with the KYBA, said next week, some girls from Bellingham, Wash. will be arriving on Kaua‘i headed by coach Randy Kaui, a former Kapa‘a resident.
The team of girls will be involved in a series of goodwill games at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center starting July 13.
Matsumoto said originally, the team was scheduled to participate in a tournament on O‘ahu. However, after sustaining some team injuries, the team pulled out of the tournament, but will still visit Hawai‘i, opting to come to the coach’s home island.
