LIHU‘E — Twice in one day, Tuesday, Ken D’Attilio of Inter-Island Helicopters aboard Air-1 was called out on emergency calls for the County of Kaua‘i.
Most of his afternoon was spent dropping water on the Kalaheo fire, and when he got back to his office at Hanapepe, the emergency scanner announced that a woman had injured her leg at or near Waipo‘o Falls in Koke‘e State Park.
Because of the long summer days, he was able to effect the rescue during daylight’s waning moments, meeting Kaua‘i Fire Department rescue specialists at a landing zone near the Pu‘u Hinahina Lookout on Koke‘e Road.
Both the injured female hiker and her husband were transported, along with a Kaua‘i Fire Department rescue specialist, to an awaiting American Medical Response medical crew at the landing zone, D’Attilio’s office personnel said in an e-mail late Tuesday night.
