WAILUA — Several thousand dollars in scholarships were distributed as part of the celebration marking the installation of officers for the Kaua‘i Filipino Community Council, Sunday at the Aloha Kaua‘i Beach Resort.
The KFCC is a collection of the many Filipino civic clubs that dot the island, and in commemoration of the installation of the KFCC 2009 officers, 29 scholarships were presented to graduating high school seniors.
Benjie Baclig and Rosalie Semana headlined the recipients, each senior garnering four scholarships each.
Baclig, the son of Benigno and Inocencia Baclig, has been accepted to the University of Pennyslvania Wharton School where he plans to major in Economics.
He was the recipient of a scholarship from the Kaua‘i Filipino Chamber of Commerce, the Kaua‘i Filipino Women’s Club, the St. Theresa FCC and the KFCC.
Semana, the daughter of Herbert and Avelina Semana, has been accepted at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa where she plans on pursuing a study in Health Sciences.
She was the recipient of scholarships from the Kaua‘i Filipino Women’s Club, the Laoag Saranay Association of Kaua‘i, the Kaua‘i Council of Filipino Catholic Clubs and the KFCC.
Other recipients from the Kaua‘i Filipino Chamber of Commerce include Joey Gano, Courtney Cabral, Tanya Rames and Dustin Valdez.
Kaua‘i Filipino Women’s Club scholarship recipients include Baclig, Mark Bonilla, Chaelyn Briones, Semana, Dreana Valenciano and Dawn Vess.
Jeianna Mararagan, the daughter of Melvin and Joletta Mararagan, accepted the Pangasinan Association of Hawai‘i scholarship to help her at the Western Washington University where she plans on studying Dance Therapy.
Joining Semana in accepting scholarships from the Kaua‘i Council of Filipino Catholic Clubs are Kirstie Pascual, Ashley Negrillo and Mary Lindsey.
Diana Mae Navarro, the daughter of Antonio and Emilia Navarro, will be using her scholarship from the St. Theresa FCC to help in her pursuit of a Nursing degree from El Camino College.
Scott Taylor and Darren Lapitan were recipients of scholarships from the Immaculate Concepcion FCC, and Ashley Jimenez, the daughter of James and Shanlee Jimenez, was awarded the scholarship from the Abra Association of Kaua‘i.
Joining Baclig and Semana as recipients of scholarships from the KFCC are Briones, a Waimea High School graduate who plans on studying Civil Engineering at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, Bonilla, a Kapa‘a High School graduate who plans on using is Imprinting senior project in his pursuit of a Nursing degree at UH, Valdez, the son of Jaime and Colleen Valdez, Rames, a Kapa‘a High School valedictorian who plans on studying Business at UH, and Vess, the first runner up in the 2009 Miss Kaua‘i Filipina scholarship pageant, who will be pursuing a course in Pre-Medicine at UH.
Liza Cabal Trinidad was installed as the president of the KFCC for 2009. Her board includes vice presidents Charlmaine Bulosan, Jimmy Iloreta, Luz Diaz, secretary Celia Melchor Questin, Treasurer Pia Gregorio, Auditor Domie Bucasas, and Directors Ely Afos, Mila Calipjo, Hannah Timbol, Lita Dela Pena, Florendo Melchor, Edita Dullaga, Jean Iida, Lani Garcia and Thelma Pascual.
