PHOENIX — The Pookela Volleyball Club completed its competition on July 3 at the Volleyball Festival in Phoenix, Ariz. The teams arrived back in Kaua‘i on July 4.
The 14-year-old team finished the week with a 9-6 record. Its final ranking was 76th out of the 103 teams competing. It also qualified for the Confidence Division tournament and finished second, losing a tough match, 28-26, 25-22 to the Ripcurls. Evan Costa and Heidi Aceret were the team’s coaches.
The 16-year-old squad, coached by Corey Morishita and James Rocha, finished with an 8-7 record, placing it 68th of the 113 teams in the division.
Meril Carvalho and Lorna Tresler-Basquez coached the 18-year-old unit to a 6-10 mark, finishing 46th of the 50 teams entered.
The Hooikaika 17-year-old team, coached by Chad Delanoza, came away with a 2-12 record, ranking 45th out of 49 teams.
This was the 24th annual all-girls Volleyball Festival, with teams from age 12-18 competing during the five-day event. Teams are guaranteed at least 13 games played and the finals are typically nationally televised.
The experience leads in well to the Kaua‘i Volleyball Challenge Invitational, which gets started on Aug. 13. The three-day event will have 28 teams competing, 15 of which will make the trip from the mainland.
Games will be played at the Kaua‘i, Kapa‘a, Waimea and Island High School gyms, with an awards banquet following the championships on Aug. 15 at Kilohana.
