LIHU‘E — County officials announced this an increase in the Department of Water’s cost of power adjustment charge effective July 1.
The increase, $0.03 per thousand gallons, will cover the energy costs incurred during the past fiscal year that were higher than the energy cost allowance in the water rates, a press release said.
In the future, if energy costs decrease, the cost of power adjustment may result in a decrease in water rates.
Energy costs are a significant percentage of the department’s annual expenses. Last year, energy costs came to $2.9 million or 17 percent of operating costs, while the department’s water sales revenue totaled $17.2 million, according to the release.
All of the Department of Water’s revenues are obtained from water sales, not from real property taxes or the county’s general fund.
