KILAUEA — Kirstie Daly finished with a game-high nine points in an effort that came up short for the Kilauea Hui, Thursday night.
“We can only get five girls out so it’s going to be a lesson in running up and down the court,” said Mits Yokotake, the coach of Kilauea in the Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association 18 and Over girls league that started Monday night.
Kelsey Cadiente, the feisty guard for Kaua‘i High School during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation season, paced Wailua with eight points in its 18-17 edge over Kilauea.
Earlier in the evening, Morgan Childes and Nick Lu took the shooter’s positions for Hanakila in its 52-36 win over Team Central in a Boys Under 14 match at the Kilauea Neighborhood Center.
Childs, posting 11 first-half points, came back against a readjusted Team Central defense and popped a pair from outside the three-point arc in the second half to finish with 17 points for Hanakila.
Nick Lu led the relief wave with 11 points, seven coming in the first half. Following the leaders, Marlon Cudiamat added six second-half points followed by James Stevens and Angelito Raza adding four points each.
“Marlon is going to get a lot of playing time when he gets to high school,” said Bill Troutman, coordinator of the Kaua‘i Police Activities League mitey mite program, who was watching the action. “He’s got a lot of hustle.”
The Hanakila defense added to the passing woes of Team Central by holding Matthew Cummings to just four points. But the Central got to Cameron Simao who worked both sides of the ball to finish with a game-high 23 points, including an 11-for-17 showing at the charity stripe, a testament to his heavy involvement for second efforts and putbacks.
Kelsey Cadiente kept Wailua in front of Kilauea in a game governed by the no-bench status of Kilauea, the more experienced players slowing down the tempo.
But Daly found the net in the second period for two buckets to pull Kilauea to just a one-point deficit, 9-8 at the half.
A big cheer opened the second half as Kimiko Kuwabara found the net from near the three-point mark for Kilauea’s first lead of the night at 10-9, the Hui returning to full force after the Hui played four-deep for the final few minutes of the second quarter.
That put Kapua Chandler in the point position where her height pushed the ball to the right spots despite the defensive posting of Chanita Makanui and Kayla Werner for Wailua.
Chandler finished with six points in a losing effort followed by Danielle Jure posting a pair.
Following Cadiente’s lead, Werner put in four points followed by Kira Taylan and Chelsie Villatora finishing with three points each, each player launching a trey at key periods to keep Wailua in control of the game.
KYBA hosts three games tonight (Friday) at the Kaua‘i High School gym starting at 6 p.m. when Gee’s Angels take on Waimea followed by the Kamikaze going up against Kaulupono at 7 p.m. The finale will see the G-Unit A going up against Hanakila.
