POIPU — Thanks to all the competitors and their support ohana, the Kaua‘i Bodyboarding Association had a successful second annual Shipwrecks event on Saturday. The weather provided good conditions for the competition, with the water at three to four feet and the wind cooperating.
There were 32 entrants throughout the categorized events. Travis Miyazaki stood as the highest rated competitor, for which he received paid airfare and entry funds to the upcoming USBA Pro-Am event, July 4 at Sandy Beach on O‘ahu. He also took home a new Science bodyboard.
Miyazaki was the top finisher in the Open Men’s division. He was followed by second-place finisher Drake Humiston, third-place finisher Brandon Scribner and Jona Diaz in fourth.
In the Junior Men’s division, Christian Deason took first, followed by Matthew Holzman, Sammy Morretino and Patrick Thesken.
In the Drop Knee category, it was Brandon Buza besting the rest of the field. Bud Miyamoto finished in second place, followed by Kawika Kaui in third and Daniel Carter in fourth.
Each top-four finisher received a t-shirt, trophy and Crysis Bodyboard magazines.
All bodyboarders and KBA competitors can still get information about the USBA Pro-Am tour, which will end at Pipeline, by calling the hotline at 635-7441.
Organizer Debra Kekaulua pointed out the efforts of the YMCA, DLNR, KQNG radio, Island Trophies and Rainbow T’s, plus all of those who volunteered their assistance and services for the event.
