LIHU‘E — The Rotary Club of Kaua‘i contribution towards combating illiteracy was very timely.
“The funds from the Rotary Club of Kaua‘i will be used to acquire adult literacy materials,” said Carolyn Larson, librarian at the Lihu‘e Library.
Larson was on hand with Bill Grier, president of the Friends of Lihu‘e Library, to accept the contribution from Dick Olsen, incoming president of the Rotary Club of Kaua‘i, on Monday morning.
“This is most appropriate since this year, the Lihu‘e Library summer reading program has two new adult programs,” Larson said.
Between June 17 and July 17, adult readers can participate in this program by reading to earn rewards as outlined by the program guidelines.
Adult readers must be 18 years or older to qualify and in addition to acquiring points towards the big drawings at the end of the program, weekly winners are eligible for other premiums including McDonald’s certificates, Hawai‘i State Library System materials, books, CDs, and Kellogg’s snacks.
In a second related program, adult readers can solicit contributions benefiting the Friends of the Lihu‘e Library for each book they read during the summer reading program period.
These two programs join the programs for children and teens that also started June 15 and will run through July 24 for the children’s division and July 17 for the teens.
Full program details are available at any of the Hawai‘i State Library on Kaua‘i with readers becoming eligible for sweepstakes prizes.
Olsen said the presentation is part of the Rotary Club of Kaua‘i’s battle against illiteracy.
“We also inform our guest speakers at the Lihu‘e Library that in lieu of a speaker’s gift, we will donate a book in their name to the library as a gratuity for their service,” Olsen said.
Larson said each of the donated books carry a special bookplate inside the cover indicating that it is a contribution from the Rotarian guest speaker.
The Rotary Club of Kaua‘i meets each Friday at the JJ’s Broiler in the Anchor Cove shopping center starting at noon.
