Cheyenne Duarte finished with a game-high 11 points to lead Waimea to a 51-24 win over Kaulupono, Friday night at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
That was just one of only two games scheduled for the KYBA league due to the ongoing Rotary Club of West Kaua‘i/ZZ Basketball tournament taking place for boys 13 and Under and 14 and Under.
Balanced scoring by four Gee’s Angels led its 33-20 win over the Kapa‘a Titaz in another single match at the Bernice Hundley Gym in Kapa‘a, Saturday.
That game had a setback as well when players and coaches were snared in the traffic delays created by the three-vehicle double-fatal accident in Wailua.
Following Duarte in the Friday night match, Jayme Jacinto, Keesha Lagazo and Brandee Victorino each netted eight points in the Waimea Girls Under 17 win.
Kathleen Cadiente finished with 10 points and Sanoe Kaohelaulii, playing up in the league, added seven points in the Kaulupono effort.
Jessie Aki topped the Angels with eight points with Sanida Pahulehua, Lauren Claypoole and Leina‘ala McCabe each adding seven points in the Angels’ flight over the Titaz.
Layna Christian topped the Titaz’s effort with six points.
The KYBA summer league resumes a full slate of games starting Monday at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center when the Girls Under 18 division joins the action lineup.
Pop It, coached by Jerrick Fabro, will open the GU18 season against F-N-G coached by Tristan Shigematsu in a highlight match starting at 8 p.m.
A pair of Girls Under 14 matches precede that game starting with the Gee’s Angels tangling with the Kamikaze starting and 6 p.m. and the Kaulupono and Waimea girls taking the court starting at 7 p.m.
In addition to the two GU18 teams that will start action, the other two teams include Kilauea, coached by Mits Yokotake, and Wailua coached by Talbert Tacbian.
Those two teams take the court Thursday night at the Kilauea Neighborhood Center starting at 7 p.m.
