KALAHEO — Austin Gaskinn of the Pu‘uloa Outlaws posted double-digit scoring through three days of the tournament to earn Most Valuable Player, Saturday.
The honor came after the Outlaws played in the championship game short three players who had to return to O‘ahu early, and one player who sustained an injury during the Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association Boys 17 and Under Invitational tournament.
Despite the shortfall, coach Ken Tangjian’s black-shirted Outlaws wrapped up the championship with a 51-36 edge over the G-Unit squad, Saturday morning at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
In that matchup, Gaskinn teamed with Luke Kaumatule to lead the Outlaws to a win. During the opening night, Gaskinn teamed with Christian Manuel to lead the Outlaws to a 50-37 win over Team Central, and in the playoffs, Gaskinn and Manuel posted 15 points each in its 63-34 win over Kaua‘i Basketball to advance to the championship.
Kekoa Prem got the nod as the G-Unit MVP, the guard who played for Kapa‘a High School during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation season posting a game-high 18 points in the G-Unit’s 46-41 edge over Waimea in the playoffs, Friday.
Willis Batol, leading the G-Unit with 13 points in its 53-27 opening night win over Maui Lani Boyz, got the nod as the team’s second MVP.
The depth of the blueshirts extended beyond the MVPs, however, as Dalton Thronas and Villi Masaniai led the G-Unit in the second place final with seven points each.
Kaili Lagundino finished with 21 points to lead Waimea to third place in the tournament with its 56-39 win over Kaua‘i Basketball.
Kaleo Cummings, posting double-digit scoring in Waimea’s Thursday and Friday night outings, secured the MVP honor for the team coached by Chris Acoba, Paul Barba and Alika Smith.
Kekoa Colipano got the nod as MVP for Kaua‘i Basketball, scoring 11 points in its third place game below Sean Inouye’s 15 points.
Kapono Cummings, Kaleo’s brother, led the Kalepa Hillsiders with 26 points in the Consolation Championship bracket as the yellowshirts got past Ikaika Basketball, 48-42. During the tournament, Kapono posted double-digit scoring in all of its three matches.
Ben Ota finished with 11 points for Ikaika in the Consolation Championship with Trey Muraoka getting the nod as the visiting team’s MVP.
Duke Pauli got the nod as Team Central’s MVP, the tall man key to moving the ball around the court, and Kieth Tecson, netting six points on Saturday, getting the Maui Lani Boyz’s nod as MVP.
During the final matchup, Saturday, Tecson finished with six points to lead Maui Lani in its 70-23 effort against Team Central. Joe Duronslet and Canaan Higa paced the Central victory with 10 points each.
