Norma Sakaguchi
Norma Umeko Sakaguchi of Kapa‘a died on June 3, 2009, at Kaua‘i Care Center at age 91. Born on Feb. 25, 1918, in Kealia, she was a retired chambermaid with Coco Palms Hotel.
She is survived by sons Norman (Veronica) Sakaguchi of Kalaheo, Steven (Teresa) Sakaguchi of Las Vegas, Leroy (Nan) Sakaguchi of Lihu‘e, Glenn Sakaguchi of O‘ahu; sister Ayako Shibao of Waimea, eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation at 3 p.m., service at 4 p.m., on June 11, at Kapa‘a Jodo Mission.

Yoshio Kaneshiro
Yoshio “Chita” Kaneshiro of Kekaha died on June 1, 2009, at Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital at age 86. Born May 25, 1923, he was a retired seed cutter supervisor with Kekaha Plantation Sugar Company.
He was preceded in death by daughter Ethel Michioka, grandson Byron Michioka, parents Kanaichi and Toku Kaneshiro, sisters Hanako Laysa and Sally Ortogero.
He is survived by wife Alice Kaneshiro of Kekaha; sons Julius Kaneshiro of Washington, Patrick (Charmaine) Kaneshiro of Kekaha, Dereck Kaneshiro of Kekaha; daughters Lucia (Raymond) Bartels of Kekaha, Nada (James) Wong of Waianae, Faith (Les) Kwock of Mililani, Noelle (Jonathan) Renticruz of Kekaha, Annalee (Lance) Lum of Waimanalo; son-in-law Stanley Michioka; brother-in-law Thomas Ortogero; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation at 8:30-9:30 a.m., June 12, at Kaua‘i Veterans Cemetery Pavilion in Hanapepe. Service to follow at 9:30-10:30 a.m.

Joseph H. Reyes of ‘Ele‘ele died on May 26, 2009. Born July 7, 1935, he was a manager of Kaua‘i Veteran Center.
He was preceded in death by father John M. Reyes Sr., mother Lurline Ornellas, brothers Abraham Reyes and James Reyes, sister-in-laws Agnes Reyes and Emma Reyes, son-in-law Teddy Ellamar.
He is survived by wife Theresa Reyes; daughters Brenda (Stuart) Braun, Jeannette (Jan) Ellamar, Joan (Tim) Bragalone; brothers William Reyes, John (Arlene) Reyes Jr., Solomon (Sandra) Reyes; sisters Henrietta Napolis, Helen (Lou) Ellagard; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Visitation from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., service at 12:30 p.m. with burial to follow, June 13, at Hanapepe Veterans Cemetery.

Alfredo Fujii Bacarro of Mililani, Hawai‘i, died on May 17, 2009, in Honolulu, Hawai‘i at age 76. Born Oct. 22, 1932, he was an iron worker/welder.
He was preceded in death by father Anglo Bacarro, mother Okimi Fujii, brother James Bacarro and son William Bacarro.
He was survived by wife Natividad Bacarro; sons Alfredo Bacarro Jr., Renny (Suzette) Bacarro; daughters Rita Ann Moribe, Rowena Farias, Rozanne (Steven) Ladao; sisters Dorothy Bonilla and Catherine (Cereal) Fernandez; 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Lillian Iida
Lillian Yuriko Iida of Lihu‘e died on June 5, 2009, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at age 86. Born on July 13, 1922, in Kapaia, she was a retired sales representative for the Avon Corp.
She was preceded in death by father Frank Hirota, mother Alexandra Medeiros Hirota, brother Alec Hirota.
She is survived by daughters Lola (Sam) Bukoski and Cheryl (Mike) Sasaki, son Steve (Niki) Iida, sisters Eleanor (John) Stein and Jane (Casey) Look, brother Paul (Joyce) Hirota, 10 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation at 8:30 a.m. and Mass at 10 a.m., June 20, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lihu‘e.
Scattering of ashes will be private at a later date.

Laura Gomes Duarte of Kekaha died on June 2, 2009, at Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital at age 84. Born on Jan. 18, 1925, in Wahiawa, Kaua‘i, she was a housekeeper at various hotels and condos.
She was preceded in death by husband Edward Joseph Duarte, son Howard Duarte, daughters Phyllis Duarte-Fiorucci and Arlene Duarte-Heiser.
She is survived by sons Dennis (Chantal) Duarte, Thomas (Barbie) Duarte, Bennett (Pupu) Duarte and Alan (Liza) Duarte; daughters Louise Taylor and Betty (Michael) Pesce; daughter-in-law Tina Duarte and son-in-law Gigi Fiorucci; 13 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; sisters Clara Jardin, Miriam Rita, Flora Duarte, Alice Paleira; brothers-in-law George (Sarah) Duarte and Steven (Diane) Duarte; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Amelia ‘Emily’ Silva Rapozo
Amelia ‘Emily’ Silva Rapozo of Kapa‘a, died on June 6, 2009, in her home at the age of 86. Born on Jan. 17, 1923, in Kealia, she retired as the head custodian with Kapa‘a Elementary and Kapa‘a High School.
She was preceded in death by husband Frank S. Rapozo Jr.; parents Frank and Isabella Silva, brothers Manuel DeSilva and Frank Silva; sisters Mary Rocha, Tina Garcia, Georgina Carvalho, Bella Garcia and Josephine Chansky.
She is survived by sons Stephen (Joann) Rapozo of Kapa‘a and Mervin (Fay) Rapozo of Wailua Homesteads, daughters Madeline (Dennis) Yamaguchi of Kalaheo and Doreen Rita of Kapa‘a, brother Alfred Silva of Kapa‘a, sister Virginia Rosa of Kapa‘a, 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of her life will begin with visitation from 8:15-9:45 a.m. on Saturday, June 20, at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Kapa‘a. Mass celebrated at 10 a.m., burial to follow at Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens.

Merrilyn Brunswick
Merrilyn Brunswick of Kilauea, died on May 24, 2009. Born on Nov. 2, 1938, in Honolulu, she was a former Princeville Hotel employee and manager of Whaler’s General Store in Hanalei.
She was preceded in death by her mother Christine Walsh and brother Robert Walsh.
She is survived by her son Michael Cox of Kilauea; grandchildren Brandi Wil, Aliksru and Lani; aunt Caroline Kaohi and cousin Wayne Kaohi both of O‘ahu.

James Thompson
James D. Thompson of ‘Oma‘o died April 29, 2009, at home at age 61. Born Oct. 20, 1947, in Mechanicsburg, Pa., he was a retired high school math teacher with Waimea High School.
He was preceded in death by father Dick W. Thompson and brother Richard Scott Thompson.
He is survived by mother Charlotte Thompson of Kilauea; sisters Suzanne (Paul) Pond of Kilauea and Margaret Ann Thompson of Kilauea; nieces Alexandra Pond and Kieren Pond, both of Kilauea; numerous cousins; and caregiver and cousin Stephanie Parrott of Pennsylvania.
A celebration of life and rememberance will be held on the beach at Lydgate Park at 10 a.m., on Sunday, June 14. Potluck to follow.

Michiyuki “Midi” Uchida of Lihu‘e, died April 28, 2009, at the Regency at Puakea at age 92. Born May 20, 1916, in Lihu‘e, he was a retired police captain with the Kaua‘i Police Department.
He was preceded in death by wife Sachie Uchida, father Sutetaro Uchida, daughter Dee Ann Eiko Uchida and sister Mutsuko Uchida.
He is survived by sons Alvin (Susan) Uchida of Lihu‘e, Barry (Cheryl) Uchida of Lake Oswego, Ore.; grandchildren Nick and Maile Uchida; brothers Philip Uchida of Honolulu and Masami Oda of Wailua Houselots; sisters Lillian Kasumi of Honolulu and Hatsue (Hisao) Shimabukuro; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ayano Ishida Kunioka of Kalaheo, died on June 10, 2009, at Hale Kupuna, at age 95. Born on Aug. 8, 1913, in Koloa, she was a housekeeper.
She was preceded in death by husband Saburo Kunioka.
She is survived by sons Seichi John (Glorian) Kunioka of California and Charles (Sharon) Kunioka of Maui, daughter Lillian Takanishi of Kaua‘i, nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Dorothy Ishida, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Kimiyo Morimoto Akaji of Lawai, died on May 14, 2009, at Wilcox Hospital at age 92. Born Oct. 18, 1916, on Kaua‘i, she was a homemaker.
She is survived by son Bruce (Delia) Akaji of Kalaheo, daughters JoAnn (Roy) Fujimoto of Hilo, Barbara (Tom) Gargano of Georgia, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
