Hale ‘Opio Kaua‘i, Inc. is pleased to announce the Kaua‘i Youth Resource Hui, a program of positive youth development after-school activities, including evidence-based teen pregnancy prevention skills.
Hale ‘Opio is partnering with other Kaua‘i youth programs and two middle schools to provide cultural learning opportunities combined with substance use and HIV/STD risk reduction and prevention groups during non-school hours.
Hale ‘Opio was among those recently honored by Coalition for a Drug-Free Hawai’i for the successful implementation of Street Smart, an evidence-based intervention to reduce and prevent risk behaviors associated with STD and HIV infection among Asian and Pacific Islander, including Hawaiian, girls. Nationwide, boys are included also.
The girls who completed the program showed statistically significant outcomes in an evaluation designed and conducted by Dr. Velma Kameoka of the University of Hawai’i Social Science Research Institute.
1.Increased knowledge about HIV risks, transmission, and prevention
2. Increased self-efficacy for limiting HIV risk behaviors, including substance abuse
3. Increased self-efficacy for negotiating condom use
4. Increased self-efficacy for discussing safe sex
5. Increase positive attitude toward their future
Hale ‘Opio conducted the majority of cohorts in the study. Each cohort typically served twelve young women in twelve sessions over a six week period with a six-month follow-up celebration. Funding was pooled from Coalition for a Drug-Free Hawai’i, Hale ‘Opio Kaua‘i, Inc., the Women’s Fund, and Kaua‘i County’s Healing Our Island grant.
