The announcements were made during the school’s year-end awards banquet honoring standout athletes in all of the sports Waimea High School participates in as part of the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation program for 2008-2009.
Broyles, in addition to being the Outstanding Female Athlete for the Menehune, was also named as the Army Scholar Athlete Female and the recipient of the Bunji Shimomura Scholarship, Female division. Broyles was also named the outstanding female athlete for Cross Country and Track where she was the top Menehune female long distance runner.
Harold Shimono, Jr., finishing the KIF season as the No. 1 boys tennis player for Waimea, was the male recipient of the Army Scholar Athlete as well as the male recipient of the Bunji Shimomura Scholarship.
Michael Haack and Rachel Wright were acknowledged as the Menehune’s Scholar Athlete, Haack named as the male and Wright, the female recipients of this honor.
Jayme Jacinto, a multi-sport standout, was named to the Varsity Volleyball Female slot alongside Jared Matsumoto, a standout setter for the Varsity Volleyball boys.
Brandi Chinen and Chase Parongao received the top honors for the JV Volleyball, female and male, respectively.
Tiffany Lum, a consistent bowler for the Menehune program, was named the top Bowler and went on to receive honors in the Tennis Female sport where she and partner Jade Cano finished as the top KIF girls doubles team, undefeated in the KIF circuit.
Matthew Haack got the top Bowling Male honor and bother Michael Haack was tops in the Varsity Paddling program.
Ty Shitanaka led the Riflery Male group with Wright getting the nod as the top Riflery Female.
Nelson Acosta, making a strong showing during the KIF track season in the boys hurdles event, was joined by Casey Owen as the top Cheerleaders.
Amanda Albano was the top Varsity Paddling Female. Kelsey Hedges and Keeshana Albarado were named top JV Paddling Male and Female, respectively.
Torrey Santiago, strong in the jumps and an integral part of the Waimea relay team, got the nod as the top Track Male.
First baseman Michael Acoba, filling in the clean-up slot for the Waimea baseball team, got the nod as the top Baseball player.
Malcolm Carter and Kierra Barba are both guards and nailed the top slots of Varsity Basketball, Male and Female, respectively.
Paul Oligo and Cheyanne Duarte, both guards as well, nailed the JV Basketball Male and Female berths, respectively.
Jordan Kitabayashi and Kiare Alejandro were named top Varsity Soccer, Male and Female, respectively with Casen Kaohelaulii and Mahealani Hurd getting the male and female spots for the JV Soccer program.
Max Agor was announced tops in the Varsity Football program with Jake Corona getting the honor for JV Football.
Aaron Medeiros and Melissa Kagawa were announced tops in Golf for the Male and Female categories, respectively.
Peter James Joyce and Mariah Teter topped the Swimming Male and Female categories, respectively.
Michelle Koerte was the top Softball player and Christian Tangalin filled in the Male Cross Country spot opposite Broyles.
