The Kaua‘i North Shore Lions Club recently announced the “Sight is Beautiful” poster contest winners at Kilauea and Hanalei schools. The winners were announced at school assemblies in May. Contest winners received a gift certificate from the Hanalei Surf Company.

Since accepting the challenge of Helen Keller to champion the plight of the blind at one of their early international conventions in the 1920s, Lions Club international has made vision issues a key element in their activities. The “Sight Is Beautiful” poster contest emphasizes good vision. The program in Hawai‘i is open to all elementary schools that have a sponsoring Lions Club. The Kaua‘i North Shore Lions Club sponsors the contest for the Hanalei and Kilauea schools. The program also emphases the development of artistic ability in the students.
The winning posters were displayed at the District 50 Lions Convention in May. There were three winners in each of four divisions: Kindergarten through sixth grades. The number one winner in each division received state-wide recognition and cash awards at the District 50 Lions Convention. All posters were returned to Hanalei and Kilauea Schools.
Kilauea School division one winners for Kindergarten: Rocco Casale, Lexington Russell, Ryan Neumann. Division two winners for first and second grades: Angeline Raza, Liliana Perry, Gabriela Bryan. Division three for third and fourth grades: Taelee Kimura, Stella Hawthorne, Carlo Martinez and division four for fifth and sixth grades: Kiaramei Jimenez, Rachael Apona and Shabd Edralin.
Hanalei School division winners for division one Kindergarten: Kaihoa Whitfield-Seebek, Sierra Dias, Cierra Crabtree. Division two for first and second grades Miles Frazier, Cody Andrews, Brooke Kano. Division three for third and fourth grades Amber Lis, Sabrina Marvin, Alexis Ochoa and division four fifth and sixth grades: Adam Sclafani, Emily Faretta and Brendon Stogner.
The Kaua‘i North Shore Lions raises funds for scholarships and other projects with various events throughout the year.
The next fund raiser is the Annual Golf Tournament at the Prince Course and Clubhouse August 29.
