K.I.D.S School fall
registration
More learning takes place in the first five years of a child’s life. At Kaua‘i Independent Daycare Services, Inc. better known as K.I.D.S. School all parents of new children starting preschool sign up for parenting classes — a seven session course designed to offer positive parenting tools through the STEP Program (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting).
Two reasons recent attendees gave for enrolling were: To learn why my child is the way he is and better ways to handle my frustrations with him and to learn how to have my daughter do for herself, instead of me always doing it.
Classes are taught by school director, Phyllis Kunimura. This class suggests a consistent, positive and democratic approach to help parents build healthy patterns of belief and behavior in children.
For more information about K.I.D.S. School, a year-round community preschool for three and four year- olds located on the beach in Kapa‘a, contact the office at 822-0262. There are still openings for children born in 2005 and 2006 for the fall session.
Recycle warriors
More than 6,800 island keiki from 17 schools across the island collected over 12 tons of phone books for recycling during the recent “EZ to Use Your Island Pages” annual phone book recycling program. Last year Your Island Pages phone books donated 17 trees, one for each of the participating schools, at the Harry and Jeannette Weinberg Sports Fields at Lydgate Park. The trees were planted on National Make A Difference Day by over 200 island volunteers.
This year an additional $500 worth of trees were donated to the Sports Fields.
Ele‘ele School took top honors and a $500 prize for their school. Koloa School took second place and $300 and Wilcox School made third place and received $200. King Kaumualii and Kapa‘a Middle School won $50 each for being the first schools to donate books to the program.
Recycled phone books can be recycled up to six times. Converted items include products such as paper, egg cartons, envelopes, roofing materials, paper towels and tissue. The collected phone books in Hawai‘i were sold to a paper mill in Canada.
