LIHU‘E — Matisse Madden of Connecticut Ballet is offering instruction on Kaua‘i beginning June 13. Madden performed to critical acclaim as reported by the New York Times for her performance in “The Sleeping Beauty.” She tours the United States and Europe, as well as teaches intermediate and advanced ballet at Yale University. She is a certified Vaganova instructor for levels one to six.
“I am studied in many methods of ballet pedagogy; however, as both a dancer and an instructor, I have found most success in the Vaganova teaching syllabus,” her Website states. “I feel this method provides a clear template for progressive lessons, giving the students consistency. My class emphasizes the coordination of port de bras emanating from the energy of the back and torso, simultaneously allowing the dancer the freedom to dance with elegance and without tension.”
Madden is working in collaboration with Janie Crane and Kaua‘i Dance Theatre.
“The aim of my teaching is to produce dancers possessing a strong, clean classical technique with great emphasis on artistry, musicality, purity of line, co-ordination and a quality,” the Website states.
The open ballet master class is 10:30 a.m. June 13 at Lihu‘e Perish Hall and open to ages 12 and over. Cost is $15.
The ballet intensive is from June 15 to 17 at Kaua‘i Dance Theatre’s Kalaheo studio. Madden will teach two classical variations from the ballet “Raymonda.” Cost ranges per class from $30 to $60 if registered by June 1.
