LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i Performing Arts Center senior Jorey Cantu was the recipient of the 2008 Arnold Meister Award in the Performing Arts. Meister, the founder and first director of the Center, with KPAC Director Dennis McGraw made the presentation following the closing performance of KPAC’s Footloose May 3.
The award is given to the graduating senior considered best representing the spirit of KPAC and includes a ceremonial plaque and a cash award of $1500.
Cantu has had leading roles in KPAC productions of “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,” “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” “Hello, Dolly” and “Footloose.” In addition, she has been active in community productions, such as “The Wiz,” and “Beauty and the Beast.” Cantu is a soloist and member of the Kaua‘i High School chorus. She was also a recent recipient of the Mokihana Club Music Scholarship.
The awardee plans to attend Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont, Calif. this fall where she will major in music theatre. Eventually she hopes to earn her master’s degree in teaching.
This is the 8th annual presentation of the award. Previous honors have gone to Jade Soltysik, Jarhett Gaines, Jean Juliano, Ethan Shell, Sierra Stack, Donica Ida, Kelly Nichols, Kelly Nichols and Kristin Miyasaki whose names, along with Jorey’s, are printed on a large plaque which hangs permanently in the KPAC rehearsal hall.
