Seanyelle Yagi was honored as the state finalist for the 2008 Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching math and science recently at a luncheon at the Halekulani Hotel.
Yagi, a 1986 Waimea High School graduate, is a teacher at Kaewai Elementary School on O‘ahu and also worked at the UH Lab School participating in the mathematics department of the Curriculum and Research and Development Group, a news release states.
She is the only finalist in the field of mathematics. There are three finalists in the field of science, one of which is Hazel Wachi from Kekaha Elementary School.
Her parents, Alfred and Harriet Silva, reside in Kalaheo.
These four Hawai‘i public school teachers were chosen as state finalists for the nation’s highest honor in those fields. The annual competition is open to public and private school teachers.
A national committee of scientists, mathematicians and educators will select teachers nationwide for the White House award. Awardees are recognized for their contributions to teaching and learning and their ability to help students make progress in mathematics and science. Each winner will receive a $10,000 grant and an all-expense-paid trip for two to Washington D.C. The Presidential awardees will be honored in a variety of ceremonies, the release says.
