The public can help celebrate Salvation Army Week in a variety of ways, including saving money.
During the Salvation Army Week celebration that started Monday and runs through this Sunday, shoppers at the Lihu‘e and Hanapepe Salvation Army thrift stores can enjoy a 50 percent discount on all clothing sales.
The Lihu‘e store is located at the intersection of Rice and Kress streets and features show windows that are the accomplishment of the Kaua‘i High School Marketing Class under the tutelage of Charlene Navarro.
Hanapepe’s thrift store is located next to the Hanapepe Stadium.
In addition to providing bargains and community recycling through its thrift stores, the Salvation Army also administers the Kokua Soup Kitchen and the Emergency Food Pantry that offers food to those who are unable to make ends meet.
The Kokua Soup Kitchen offers hot meals three times a week at both the Lihu‘e and Hanapepe locations.
Recently, Kawai Gampon of Lawai was honored with a state Volunteer of the Year award for his age group for his fundraising efforts to help the Kokua Soup Kitchen that has seen a rise in the number of people utilizing its services.
Emergency Food Panty, providing food baskets of non-perishable food, is available from Monday through Friday, and weekends, if there is an urgent need, states a Salvation Army release.
In addition to the above services, Emergency Disaster Service is available in cooperation with federal, state and county agencies. During these times, the Army is equipped and ready to serve the public in event of major disasters including floods, fires, earthquakes and hurricanes.
Services include victim identification, food, housing, furnishings, clothing, counseling, referral and spiritual comfort to disaster victims.
A huli huli chicken fundraiser will offer people either a chicken plate lunch, or chicken-only at the stoplight in Hanapepe. The chicken sale will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., this Saturday with chicken plate lunches available for $8 and chicken only at $7.
Shoppers at Sueoka Story and the Talk Story Bookstore will have paper kettles available for a dollar donation with proceeds going to support the Hanapepe Salvation Army Youth programs.
Senior citizens will have their opportunity to celebrate on May 27 when the Hanapepe Salvation Army hosts its 8th annual Senior Citizen Luncheon at the Hanapepe Corps. from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
All senior citizens are welcome to join the Salvation Army volunteers for a day of food, fun and fellowship to celebrate the “Angels Among Us.”
Salvation Army Week was started in 1954 when President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a proclamation for the first National Salvation Army Week event.
