After the Round of 16, all the top seeds remained alive in the HHSAA State Tennis Championships at Central Oahu Regional Park.
In boys singles, top-seeded Matthew Westmoreland of Island Pacific Academy advanced into the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Pearl City’s Jordan Lum. He will move on to face eighth-seeded Marco Kobayashi of Iolani.
Kapa‘a’s Chas Okamoto, seeded ninth, fell in a tough match, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to fifth-seeded Kaimalu Cope of Kealakehe.
In girls singles, top seed Kristin Lim of Punahou beat Baldwin’s Kerrie-Ann Tobita, 6-0, 6-0. She will take on teammate Sherise Lum, the no. 5 seed.
Kaua‘i’s Sarah Kukino, the sixth seed, topped Cathlyn Goo of Punahou, 6-3, 6-1. She will now face Hawai‘i Baptist’s fourth-seeded Mari Tadaki.
Kapa‘a’s Lyndsey Tom defeated Ceara Sumida of Waiakea, 7-5, 6-4. Tom will play the no. 2 seed, Jackie Owens of Lahainaluna in the quarterfinals.
In boys doubles, top-seeded Erik Pang and Hiroshi Hikida of Punahou defeated Waimea’s Harold Shimono Jr. and Darrel Nonaka, who were seeded 10th, by a score of 6-2, 6-1. They will now face Iolani’s fifth-seeded duo of Spencer Choy and Devin Anderson.
In girls doubles, no. 1 seed Ashley Nakaoka and Jennifer Laws of Punahou continued to roll with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Pearl City’s Lindsey Watanabe and Cheynalynn Kiyotsuka. They will face fellow Punahou duo Britney Ragunton and Sarah Steele in the quarters.
In boys team action, Punahou topped the standings with 12 points, followed by Iolani with 11. Kapa‘a and Waimea each netted one point.
Punahou also led the girls standings by a wide margin, totaling 11 points. Three teams were tied in second place with four points apiece.
All quarterfinal and semifinal matches will be held today, with the Championship matches slated for Saturday.
