LIHU‘E — Torrey Santiago leaped for 43 feet, 33/4 inches to shatter a Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation record set in 2008 by Aric Cansino of Kaua‘i High School.
But the leap was more than record-breaking as it earned Santiago a berth at the state track meet, bettering the auto standard of 42’21/4”. He also earned a state berth in the Boys Long Jump event with a first finish of 21’31/2” (20’101/4” auto).
That was just one of five KIF records that fell during the KIF track and field finals, Friday night at Vidinha Stadium.
Joining Santiago, Caralyn Broyles, Natasha Abadilla, Jayme Jacinto and Charleen Miguel made up the Menehune Girls 4×400 Relay team that also set a record-breaking performance of 4:22.39, bettering the record of 4:23.9, but only getting past the consideration standard of 4:36.34.
The big night went to Island School sophomore Pierce Murphy who broke three records: the Boys 800, Boys 1500 and Boys 3000 runs.
Broyles, meanwhile, came just .01 second short of breaking the KIF record in the Girls 800 Meter Run where she stopped the clock at 2:28.03 for an automatic state berth (2:30.14). That performance fell short of the KIF record of 2:28.02 set by Kaua‘i’s Chelsea Smith-Wishard in 2006.
Broyles continued her control of the distance events, earning another first place in the Girls 1500 Meter on a 5:31.2 run, just shy of the state consideration standard of 5:29.44. She also took first place in the Girls 1500 Meter run on a 12:39.13 performance, again falling short of the state consideration standard of 12:16.84 in that event.
Abadilla, the No. 2 runner in the Menehune distance relay squad, topped the Girls 400 Meter Dash on a 1:04.97 run, falling short of the consideration standard of 1:03.84.
Miguel finished second in that event with a 1:06.15 run.
Jacinto, the No. 3 runner in the distance relay team, handily picked up a state berth (17.14) in the Girls 100 Hurdles with a first finish at 16.46. She added another first finish in the Girls 300 Hurdles on a 49.02 for another state berth (49.44).
The Kaua‘i High School Girls 4×100 Relay team of Kathleen and Kelsey Cadiente, Reanna Javinar and Jessica Iwata earned a state time with its first finish of 51.09, bettering the state time of 52.74.
Kathleen Cadiente earned a state berth with her first finish in the Girls 100 Meter Dash where she stopped the clock at 12.91 (12.94 auto), but Kelsey Cadiente fell just short of a consideration time in her first finish in the Girls 200 Meter Dash where she topped the field at 27.74 (27.64 consideration).
Kaua‘i’s Darren Acoba, finishing first in the Boys 110 Meter Hurdles, pulled ahead of the top seeds for a 16.06 finish, getting a consideration time, but falling just .02 second short of the state auto time.
Kapa‘a’s Joseph Velasco has been working the hurdles for the entire season, getting a consideration time in the 300 Meter Hurdles with a first finish of 42.77 (42.94 consideration) and the 110 Hurdles at 16.20 (16.44 consideration) for second place.

Moses Fierro, the key anchor runner in Waimea’s win in the Boys 4×400 Relay, earned a state berth with his first finish in the Boys 200 Meter Dash where he stopped the clock at 23.00, making the state auto standard of 23.04.
Kaua‘i’s Canaan Bernard beat out Fierro in the Boys 100 Meter Dash and earned a state berth with his first finish of 11.23 (11.24 auto). That time was just .02 second short of the KIF record set by Kenny Estes of Waimea in 2006. Fierro was second at 11.36.
