Students with difficulty mastering with the basics of reading and writing can explore an alternative way of learning through multi-sensory techniques taught by three Kaua‘i teachers at the 6th annual Jeanne Warburton Memorial Literacy Clinic. The clinic runs from 8 a.m. to noon June 15 to July 10 at Island School.
Multi-sensory learning employs visual, auditory and tactile methods simultaneously to enhance learning and memory, the press release says. The key to effective learning is having the student process with multiple senses at the same time. Multi-sensory learning is effective with students who may have fallen through the educational cracks as a result of learning differences, dyslexia or being a second language learner.
Founder and director of the literacy clinic, Elizabeth Scamahorn M.Ed., has been actively involved with academic training for students with learning differences for over 30 years. Her excitement about learning comes through as she is able to address specific needs of groups, classrooms or teacher in-services. There is always a key within each individual. Once discovered, it will open their door to learning.
Also teaching in the clinic are Ellen Leckrone, educational consultant and instructional specialist, and Dinah Chao, literacy teacher for Kanuikapono Charter School.
The clinic works with students’ strengths and weaknesses in several areas of literacy: Phonemic awareness (sound awareness), letter/phonemic relationship, letter formation, multiple word meanings, grammar and syntax, morphology, spelling and editing of language. Learning tricks and tools will help students discover how to be great learners.
The literacy clinic was created to fulfill a promise to friend and colleague, Jeanne Warburton, whose dream was to provide Kaua‘i children and adults with an intensive study of the fundamentals of the English language in order to communicate more effectively.
This summer we will continue to focus on parental education. Parents are the ultimate teachers of their children and are invited to participate at designated times. Through participation, parents will develop their own skills for working with their child in supportive and positive ways.
The cost is $600. For more information call 246-0233 ext. 261 or e-mail elizabeth@readkauai.com, or visit readkauai.com
