Registration deadline set for Po‘ipu tennis
Tomorrow, Friday, April 24 is the registration deadline for a men’s and women’s doubles tennis tournament set for Saturday and Sunday, May 2 and 3, at the Po‘ipu Kai Tennis Club. All proceeds will benefit the Kaua‘i United Way, according to an e-mail from event organizers. Roping weekend set at Po‘ipu
An American Cowboy Team Roping Association roping weekend is this Saturday and Sunday, April 25 and 26, at CJM Country Stables in Po‘ipu. Sign-ups are at 9 a.m. Saturday, with roping starting at 10 a.m. Participants need not be ACTRA members to enter, according to a press release. Cash prizes and trophies are being offered in steer roping, barrel racing, poles and breakaway roping, and a food booth will be offering paniolo barbecue.
Morita finishes 10th in Pac West golf
Chaminade University’s Layne Morita, a junior from Kapa‘a, carded an even-par 72 Tuesday and finished with a 54-hole total of 219 at the Hawaiian Airlines Pac West Championship at Roddy Ranch Golf Course in Brentwood, Calif., according to a news release from the university.
He shot 70-77-72, and finished three over par and four strokes behind the tournament winners, who played off to determine the individual champion. Matthew Garcia of Academy of Art (San Francisco) won the playoff.
“I’m very honored and pleased with my performance and the opportunity to play in the championship,” Morita said. “It was a great experience to head to the Mainland and compete against a high level of competition. I proved to myself I could do it,” he added. “We’re all very appreciative of the opportunity.”
Triathlon training schedule is set
Those planning on participating in the revived Kaua‘i Loves You! Triathlon are invited to participate in a training “boot camp” that was scheduled to begin Wednesday, and continues with an easy, 30-minute bike ride today, Thursday, April 23. The event is next Saturday, May 2. There are super sprint and other distances. The training schedule is available online at www.active.com or www.swimkauai.com, and there are training opportunities every day except Tuesday, April 28, and Friday, May 1.
Tokioka set to tee it up on Maui
Pono Tokioka of Puhi, son of Beth Tokioka and state Rep. Jimmy Tokioka (D-central Kaua‘i), is the lone Kauaian scheduled to play at the Hawai‘i State Junior Golf Association 14 and Under Junior Tour Series stop this Saturday and Sunday, April 25 and 26, at The Dunes at Maui Lani golf course on Maui, according to a HSJGA press release.
Barrel racing set for next Saturday
The American West Kaua‘i Rodeo Association Race #3 is Saturday, May 2, at 3 p.m. at CJM Country Stables in Po‘ipu, with barrel racing and gymkhana events. Admission is free. Fontanilla leads Rookies in softball
Archie Fontanilla nearly hit for the cycle, smacking a home run, triple and two singles, going four for four for the Rookies in Kaua‘i Senior Softball action. The Rookies downed Kawaihau, 16-11, moving the Rookies to 7-5 on the season. Kawaihau fell to 2-10. The Rookies used two, five-run innings, and on defense shut down the Kawaihau attack, holding them to just three runs in five innings before Kawaihau exploded for back-to-back, four-run innings, in the sixth and seventh frames. Sherwood Iida had two singles and a triple, going three-for-four, to pace Kawaihau, according to information provided by the teams.
Annual business canoe races set
The 22nd Annual Kaua‘i Business Canoe Race, presented by Kaiola Canoe Club, is scheduled for Sunday, May 24, at Hanama‘ulu Beach Park, with a registration deadline of Wednesday, May 20, according to information provided by the club. In addition to awards for the top three finishers in each class, there will be presentations for best dressed and most motivated crews. Distances are less than a quarter mile, and there are novice, open, mixed novice and mixed open divisions. Training sessions can be scheduled, and steerspersons can be provided. Lihu‘e Pop Warner golf tourney set
The Lihu‘e Pop Warner Association golf tournament is Sunday, May 31 at 8 a.m. at the Kaua‘i Lagoons, a three-man scramble format with $100 entry fee that includes green fees, prizes, awards and lunch.
