LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i High School scored nine runs in the first inning of its second game against Kapa‘a Saturday at Isenberg Field.
That was en route to an 18-8 win in a contest shortened by the 10-run ruling to complete a Kaua‘i sweep in the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation softball games.
Earlier, the Red Raiders cranked out four runs on three hits, including another Jessica Iwata homerun in the fourth inning en route to a 10-5 edge over the Lady Warriors.
Wailana Borrero, the Raiders’ pitcher, fueled the sweep on the mound, allowing six hits in game one while striking out nine Kapa‘a batters, walking two and hitting one.
In game two, Borrero allowed five hits, struck out five and walked five. But she had a no-hitter going until the third inning where she gave up a single to Kori Kimura. In the fourth frame, Borrero faltered and Kapa‘a jumped on her for four more hits, scoring all of its eight runs in the third and fourth frames where Borrero gave up three of her six walks and struck out three batters.
Offensively, Borrero scored three times in each of the games and was 1-2 in game two and 3-3 in game one with a total of three RBI, all coming in game one.
Iwata followed Borrero in game one with a homerun in the fourth frame with two RBI as Kaua‘i notched seven hits for 10 runs. Randee Layosa was 1-3 with an RBI and Aniase Soltren finished 1-3 with an RBI to lead the Raiders in game one.
Jori Jasper, finishing 1-2 in game two had two RBI along with Carly Matsumoto (0-3) who also marked two RBI. Iwata finished 1-2 with an RBI, Layosa (0-2) and Shereen Doi (0-2) also marked RBI.
Ta’ashi Napoleon went 3-4 in game one with an RBI for Kapa‘a. She was followed by pitcher Melina Obar, 2-4 with an RBI. Kori Kimura (1-3), Reggie McCabe (1-3) and Shalyn Tupou (1-3) all singled.
Kimura improved to 2-4 with an RBI and scored once followed by Napoleon (1-3) with an RBI and scoring once in game two. Leihua McCabe finished 1-2 with two RBI and Leeanna Baltazar singled.
Kapa‘a next travels to the Waimea Canyon Park Wednesday in a single match against the Menehune starting at 5:30 p.m.
