The Kaua‘i High School softball team came up with three runs in the seventh inning to pull off a 6-4 win over Waimea in Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation girls softball Wednesday night at Waimea Canyon Park.
Facing a 4-3 deficit, Kaua‘i opened the seventh with a walk to Alyssa Carvalho. With one out, Jessica Iwata (1-4), who hit a triple in the fifth inning, also walked, as did Borrero, setting the stage for the Raider scoring.
Jori Jasper got aboard on a fielder’s choice, Kawai Klattenhoff flied out, and Randee Layosa singled to left field to clear the bases and pull Kaua‘i into the lead.
Red Raider pitcher Wailana Borrero picked up the win on the mound, and drove in two RBIs on one hit in the victory.
She struck out five, walked two and hit two batters while giving up four runs.
Shelley Koerte suffered the loss for Waimea, allowing six runs on six hits and scattering five walks, three coming in the seventh inning when the meat of Kaua‘i’s lineup came up to bat. She also struck out four batters, including three back-to-back in the second inning, and did not hit a batter.
Earlier, MarieBeth Watanabe, getting hit by a pitch, scored on a Kawehi Ephan double to give Waimea a 4-3 lead.
Kaua‘i opened with two runs when Carvalho and Naja Pungan, both singling, scored in the first frame. Watanabe, taking first on a walk, scored to answer for Waimea, and Tauina Tafiti, getting hit by a pitch in the second frame, tied the contest, 2-2, scoring on a fielder’s choice.
Tafiti, singling, scored in the fourth inning to pull Waimea into the lead 3-2 on an Ariel Mizumoto fielder’s-choice play.
Iwata, tripling in the fifth, tied the contest 3-3 after scoring on a Borrero RBI single to right. That run was answered when Watanabe scored to pull Waimea ahead 4-3 in the bottom of the frame.
Joining Borrero, Klattenhoff (2-3) had two RBIs. Jasper (0-4) and Layosa (1-3) both had an RBI in the win.
Ephan (1-3) led the Menehune with two RBIs with a double, and Fiare Moe (0-3) had an RBI.
The Kaua‘i win sets the stage for Saturday, when the Red Raiders host Kapa‘a in a double-header starting at 10 a.m. at the Isenberg Park in Lihu‘e.
