The next session of classes that are a part of the ongoing seminar series focused on growing food will begin at Kaua‘i Community College on Thursday from 3 to 6 p.m., according to a press release this week.
The release stated that the seminar is designed for persons who wish to learn the skills and successful practices of organic food production for use at their home garden or as part of a community garden group in their neighborhood.
The instructors are experienced Kaua‘i farmers and gardeners who have learned the tricks of growing vegetables, fruits, herbs and other food products in the challenging semi-tropical soil conditions on our island.
The seminar provides participants with instructional resources developed by the University of Hawai‘i College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources and other leading organizations that specialize in organic farming and sustainable systems of food production.
The 10-session seminar series meets on Thursday afternoons from 3 to 6 p.m. This newly designed series will combine academic classroom instruction with practical hands-on training sessions in the Campus Garden at the College. The goal is to help each participant to acquire basic gardening skills via a combination of individual and group sessions. The instructors will also be available to assist with individual counseling and technical support at the Campus Garden and at home gardens and/or at neighborhood community garden sites.
These seminars are part of the College’s Food Industry Career Pathways Program intended to support Kaua‘i’s goal of food self-sufficiency. Graduates are qualified to start a home garden, improve the one they currently manage, or participate in a community garden in their neighborhood. Many candidates do both, that is they manage a home garden and also contribute time to a neighborhood garden.
The tuition is $120 for the 10-session program and can be paid with a credit card by calling the Office of Continuing Education and Training at 245-8318.
