KIF track goes back to the basics

LIHU‘E — Basil Scott, the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation scorekeeper and coach, was off-island, and the qualifying track meet, Friday, went into back-up mode.

With no one to operate the photo-finish computer system, finishes were recorded using the traditional hand times, where timers, assigned individually to lanes, recorded athletes in their assigned lanes as they finished.

Times and finishes needed to be correlated, and without a printer on the field, the results of a majority of the events will be faxed to the newspaper, probably sometime today, once everything is verified.

There were some events where results could be obtained, such as the long jump, where Kaua‘i High School jumper Kathleen Cadiente cleared a state berth by just one-quarter of an inch with a leap of 15-9 3/4, eking out the qualifier standard of 15-9 1/2 based on the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association’s 2008 track and field standards.

Kaua‘i High School Athletic Director Ross Shimabukuro said the 2009 HHSAA standards are due out any day now.

In other arenas, Jessica Iwata, a Kaua‘i standout in girls softball, and freshman Reanna Javinar, both ran in the girls 200-meter run for the first time this year.

Iwata, who psyched herself up for the event following a good showing in the girls 100, said, “Normally, I just run between the base paths. This is the first time we’re running the 200-meter, and I think I’m going to die.”

The senior did well, finishing first in the 200, with Javinar finishing among the top three of the event.

Kaua‘i boys jumper Allen Domingo did well in his two events, finishing the boys long jump on a leap of 20-2 1/4.” That fell short of the state consideration distance of 20-4 3/4. Domingo continued to show strong in the Boys Triple Jump where he finished on a 37-5 1/2 leap, falling short of the state consideration standard of 40-6 3/4.
