PO‘IPU — Coralyn Murayama earned 41 points to take the All-Around Cowgirl honors at the latest Kaua‘i All Girl Rodeo Association event, Sunday at CJM Country Stables.
Kim Medeiros, tops in the Steer Undecorating and Goat Tying events, finished as the Reserve Cowgirl with 33 points.
En route to taking the top spot in the rodeo, Murayama captured third in the 1st D of the 3D Barrels event by riding Honey to an 18.138 go and followed that performance by taking Tennaco to a 19.415 go for fourth place in the 2nd D of Barrels.
She finished tops in the Breakaway Roping with a 17.50 average on two go’s and third below Medeiros in the Steer Undecorating event on a 15.62 average on two go’s, icing the All-Around honor with a first finish in the 2nd D of the 3D Pole Bending with a 24.446 go.
Medeiros exerted strong challenge to the spot, finishing first in the 2nd D of 3D Barrels with a 19.148 go, first in the Goat Tying at 22.548, an event that is signature for the cowgirl garbed in a bright orange top. But Medeiros’ best performance came in the Steer Undecorating event where she blistered the field with a 6.54 average on two go’s, almost four seconds faster than second finisher Debbie Bail’s 10.43 average on two go’s and Murayama’s third place finish of 15.62 average on two go’s.
A high-five by the mother-daughter team of Cheree Rapozo-Vasconcelles and Alexis Vasconcelles was well deserved as the steers bettered the 15-team field with just four teams netting scores.
The mother-daughter team finished with a 10.76 on one go followed by American flag bearer Britni Ludington-Braun teaming with Stantel Wong for a 16.28 on one go. The team of Rhonda Kaui and Joyce Miranda filled in third with a 17.55 on one go and All-Around cowgirl Murayama teamed with Kelli Carveiro for a 21.32 go.
Ludington-Braun topped the Barrels event with a 17.587 go for the top spot in the 1st D, Kelli Carveiro putting on a strong challenge at 18.053 followed by one of Murayama’s rides at 18.138.
Rapozo-Vasconcelles filled in the second spot of the 2nd D under Medeiros with a 19.307 go followed closely by Janine Hashitate at 19.388 and Murayama’s second ride of 19.415.
Kaui topped the 3rd D on a 20.591 followed by Sheri Carveiro at 21.669 and Laureen Naumu-Balocan at 24.696.
Ludington-Braun continued her strong showing with a second finish in the Goat Tying event at 29.758 followed by Wendy Tannery at 34.271. Kaui finished fourth at 34.912 with Kelli Carveiro (39.228) rounding out the leader board for that event.
Kelli Carveiro also showed her strength in the arena with a second finish in the Breakaway Roping event on a 21.40 average on two go’s below Murayama’s 17.50/2. Kaui filled in third of that event at 22.68/2, edging out Rapozo-Vasconcelles (22.84/2) and Corinna Vasconcelles who clocked 5.84 on a single go.
Tannery topped the 3D Pole Bending on a 21.719 run through the poles for top honors in the 1st D followed by Alexis Vasconcelles (22.673). Following Murayama in the 2nd D, Shan Mundon (25.260), Hashitate (25.327), Tierra Rapozo (25.358) and Courtney Medeiros (25.467) filled in the ranks.
Joyce Miranda topped the 3rd D on a 26.610 followed by Kelli Carveiro (28.543), Naumu-Balocan (34.619) and Cheyanne Tannery, one of the youngest cowgirls in the arena, at 38.170.
