LIHU‘E — Joseph Hoapili, the 50-year-old Lihu‘e man who stands accused of stabbing to death his 53-year-old wife Fredlynn Hoapili earlier this month, pleaded not guilty to the charge of second-degree murder Thursday in 5th Circuit Court.
At the March 9 preliminary hearing in District Court, the Hoapilis’ adult son John testified that he was awoken early on the morning of March 3 to his mother’s cries for help. When he broke into his parents’ locked bedroom, he saw them struggling and a knife — a large kitchen knife the family had used to cut meat during cooking — in her chest.
Joseph Hoapili’s bail is set at $1 million. His trial is set to begin on June 8, according to court records.
