LIHU‘E — Brock Santiago gave up two hits and allowed two earned runs through five innings to help Hanapepe close on a 10-6 edge over Kapa‘a, Sunday at Vidinha Stadium.
Hanapepe had earned the title for the Americans of Japanese Ancestry baseball league last week in a win over Makaweli, and closed off its season with just one loss.
Santiago, in handling the mound chores for the Rivermen, gave up just two hits with nine strikeouts and nine walks in his five-inning tenure.
Keith Nonaka came in relief and closed with four hits allowed, three strikeouts and four walks. He also allowed four earned runs.
Kapa‘a, relying on the Mundon team of Dustin, starting on the mound, and Allen closing, had no strikeouts while between the pair allowed seven earned runs on nine hits and walking six.
Hanapepe started scoring with three runs in the second, added five more runs in the fourth and graced the win with a run in the fifth and seventh frames.
Kapa‘a was held scoreless until the fifth when the newest team in the AJA league scored two runs, added three more in the sixth and finished with a run in the eighth inning.
Wendall Nonaka topped the Hanapepe offense with a 3-5 showing in the box including a double and had three RBI. Keith Nonaka (0-4) finished with two RBI, Quinton Natividad (3-4) had an RBI along with secondbase Devin Yamase (1-3). Tyrus Matsumoto (1-1) and Leroy Nonaka (1-2) singled.
Austin Alfiler (2-3) topped the Kapa‘a hitting with two RBI and Allen Mundon (0-1) had an RBI. Micah Furtado (1-1), Kawaihau Torio (1-2), Wally Palacio (1-3) and Braden Kamibayashi (1-2) each singled.
Lihu‘e went to Tyfin Texeira for pitching and the Builder bats combined for three singles, four doubles and a triple to push nine runs across the plate en route to beating Makaweli 9-5 in the opener of a double-header at Hanapepe Stadium.
Texeira, the young pitcher who started for Lihu‘e two weeks ago, went for six innings giving up a dozen hits while striking out four and walking five. He also allowed five earned runs.
Curtis Matsumura and Mikey Cardinez finished with an inning each, combining for no earned runs while allowing just one hit, striking out two and walking one.
Makaweli outhit Lihu‘e 13-8, but could only generate five runs, one unearned as Kainoa Pezario, lead off hitter, finished with a triple and a single for two RBI. Brenden Hew (1-2) doubled and had an RBI with Jason Nakata (1-2) singling for an RBI.
Makaweli shortstop Leighton Otoman (1-3) doubled, Ikaika Pezario (3-4), Klayford Nakaahiki (4-5) and Mike Shimatsu (1-1) notched hits for the Indians.
Lihu‘e was led by long ball hitter Bobby Texeira (2-2), Tyfin’s dad, finishing with two doubles for two RBI, Corey Sakai (2-4) tripling and doubling for two RBI and catcher Derrik Lacaden (1-3) coming up with two RBI.
Curtis Sadamitsu (1-2) doubled for an RBI. Tyrus Cardinez (2-4) finished with two singles.
Waimea exploded for seven runs in the fourth inning to break a 1-1 deadlock, but Kalaheo answered with five runs in the sixth in a losing effort as the Tsunami took a 10-6 win, its second on the season, behind 13 hits to Kalaheo’s 11 whacks.
Edd Yamase took the win for Waimea on the mound with six innings of work, allowing five earned runs on eight hits while striking out two and walking none. Liko Pereira finished in three innings allowing three hits, striking out none and walking one.
Kainoa Santos and Keola McCallum shared mound duties for Kalaheo, each going four innings. Combined they gave up 10 earned runs on 13 hits while striking out two and walking five.
Jordan Kitabayashi (2-4) paced the Waimea hitting with a double, the only one for Waimea, and a single with two RBI.
Kelsey Morikawa (2-3) finished with three RBI, Kellen Nakaahiki (1-3) had two RBI. Pereira (2-4), Kevin Agena (1-5) and Guy Ishihara (2-4) each had an RBI. Edd Yamase (1-4) and Ahren Kaneshiro (2-4) also marked hits for the Tsunami.
Dave Bukoski (1-3) doubled for an RBI to lead Kalaheo bats. Brenden Ishibashi (2-4), Zoomie Bukoski (2-4) Kaina McCallum (1-3) and Jason Koga (0-2) each marked an RBI.
Kaina Santos (2-4) singled and doubled, Keola McCallum (2-5) and Danny Miyasato (1-4) all had hits for Kalaheo.
With the completion of the season, coaches and directors for the Kaua‘i AJA will select an all-star team to compete at the state tournament scheduled for April 11 and 12 at the Les Murakami Stadium on the University of Hawai‘i campus.
