PUHI —Ninth grade students at Kaua‘i High School got a taste of college life, Tuesday.
About 60 students were touring the campus at Kaua‘i Community College where they got to meet instructors, KCC students and even spend time in a college class, said Rhonda Liu, the KCC outreach counselor.
This is not like Jump Start which allows students to take classes at the college for credit while still in high school, Liu said. The Tuesday tour was just one where students can get an experience of what it’s like to be in college.
Tuesday’s group was the second of several classes that will be touring the campus through the week, Liu said. Each of the groups will have about 60 students.
“One of the classes the students will be in is a history class where Alan Boyes, one of the KCC new instructors, talks about World War I,” Liu said.
One of the teacher-chaperones for the group said the students have been working a lot with the Hawaiian Studies class where they got to learn about how pidgin should be a second language for Hawai‘i students.
Other subject matter they learned included customs from Kimo Perry and Hawaiian weaponry by Shawn Chung.
“During the tour, the students also became acquainted with the five International students that are attending KCC,” Liu said. “They learned that in Hawai‘i, most students take three classes a day, average. That compares with Indonesia where students average 16 classes a day and with the Philippines where students average eight classes a day.”
The day was not complete without a visit to cafeteria for lunch.
