The Lihu‘e Library is proud to announce the winners for its “Young Reviewer’s” contest. There were 35 entries. Jan Tenbruggencate judged each entry on three criteria: Winners had to usefully describe or summarize the book and give the reader a strong sense of what the book was about; present their analysis of the book in an interesting and inventive way so that their book reviews were readable and entertaining and express their interpretation of the book or reflect on their active engagement with the book.
There were two grand prize winners, one at the high school level and one at the middle school level. Each were awarded with a certificate and two movie passes to Kukui Grove Cinema. Category winners were chosen for best reviews of specific genres and were awarded with a gift certificate for a book of their choice from the young adult prize vault. The two winning reviews will be printed in The Garden Island over the next two weeks.
Grand prize winner Melissa Miner reviewed “Indiana Jones and the Unicorn’s Legacy.” Grand prize winner in animal fiction was Stefanie Gushikuma for her review of “A Dog’s Life: An Autobiography.”
Category book review winners are as follows: general fiction, Dillon Ancheta for “A Long way From Chicago;” science fiction, Reese Hashimura for “Scorpia;” non-fiction, Whitney Pigao for “Soul Surfer;” action fiction, Frederick Astrologio for “Eyes of the Emperors;” mystery, Michelle Galano for “Death Note: Another Note, The Los Angeles BB Cases” and for fantasy, Kelsey Ann Vea for “The Lightening Thief.”
