LIHU‘E — Four consecutive turnovers and eight unanswered points in the fourth quarter created a gap Papalina could not overcome Saturday.
James Stevens scored all of his game-total six points in that period to lead Hanakila to a 10-4 frame en route to a 38-26 win over Papalina in the county’s 13 and under boys basketball game at the Kaua‘i High School gym.
Led by Marlon Cudiamat and James Paik who netted nine and eight points, respectively, Hanakila’s win was one of three boys games and a single girls game.
Trey Aguano netted a game-high 10 points to lead Papalina who got strong defensive posting performances from Javan Torres, Vaughn Thompson and Tate Hashimoto.
Papalina kept up with the Kilauea boys through the first half, relying on the strong ball movement from its guards, Kainoa Simao, Jessem Cumlat and Tystin Gummerus, and an Aguano putback at the buzzer saw the match deadlocked 14-14 at the half.
Hanakila roared back with strong defensive pressure that forced Papalina turnovers resulting in an increasing lead and holding the Kalaheo squad to just a digit in the fifth period.
With 17 ticks on the clock, Makana Aki pushed a pass to Steven McCabe, but the buzzer went off on a 28-27 heartbreaker as Westside, coached by Dino Pabre, edged out the G-Unit coached by William Aki.
Kevin Tuczon sparked a strong Westside third period with a bomb from outside the three-point arc followed by Chavis Garma nailing a bucket as the Waimea boys outgunned the G-Unit 8-2 to take a 15-10 lead into the lockers at the half.
But the G-Unit regrouped and sparked by Fresno Masaniai and McCabe, each nailing four points including a three-point missile from McCabe in the sixth period, the G-Unit outscored Westside 11-5, coming up just a point shy at the buzzer.
Peterson Lahip and Garma paced the Westside win on 11 and 10 points, respectively. Masaniai got the high-point nod for the G-Unit with eight points.
Marrel Kaious netted nine points to lead Ho‘ouila to a 44-17 win over Lihu‘e in the third game of the day.
