WAIMEA — Waimea’s Malcolm Carter finished with a game-high 19 points, but Kapa‘a controlled the contest with a 60-45 win Saturday night at the Clem Gomes Gym in Waimea.
Earlier, the Kapa‘a JV boys was 1-4 in free throws and despite a late-period trey by Bradley Coloma, Waimea wrapped up a 44-41 win by dropping seven of its eight foul shots.
Kapa‘a marked 27 points through the combined efforts of Kekoa Prem and Kekoa Calipano, Prem netting 16 points in the win.
Prem opened the books with five points in Kapa‘a’s 11-8 first quarter bulge, Waimea staying in the contest after Micah Rita nailed a three-pointer with less than two minutes remaining in the first quarter.
With the game under control, Kapa‘a’s reserves had an opportunity on the floor and Carter capitalized on that to explode for nine points in the fourth quarter, including two from outside the three-point arc.
Corey McDown found the net from outside the three-point zone, but the effort came too late with just a dozen ticks remaining, and a bucket from Kalen Kali Abihai at the buzzer pulled Waimea to its final showing.
Following Prem and Calipano, Duke Pauli and Spam Lindsey finished with six and five points, respectively, followed by Thomas Gausepohl with five, and Cody Abigania, Stephen Greenleaf and Sean Shigematsu chalking up four points apiece.
With the win, Kapa‘a takes a wait-and-see posture with a 2-1 record heading down the final stretch of Round 2. Waimea will travel to the Raiderdome on Wednesday for a meeting with Kaua‘i, currently 2-0 in Round 2. Kapa‘a meets Kaua‘i for the final time, Saturday. Kapa‘a holds the Round 1 title.
