HONOLULU — Gov. Linda Lingle released $2,105,000 for improvements to Koke‘e Road between mile posts 0.80 and 4.60, according to a Friday press release.
Koke‘e Road, after its merge with Waimea Canyon Drive, currently consists of a 20-foot wide paved roadway with dirt shoulders. Drop-offs along the edge of the paved roadway have been created by rain runoff, requiring extensive maintenance.
The project will construct paved shoulder swales, or shallow troughs, along both sides of the roadway to direct runoff to existing irrigation ditches. This will make the roadway safer for motorists and provide relief to maintenance crews who service this location, the release said.
The total project cost is estimated to be $2,355,000, which includes a previous allotment of $250,000 for already-completed design. Construction is scheduled to begin in October 2009 and be completed in April 2010.
The project is part of the $1.87 billion, public infrastructure construction plan unveiled by Lingle in December 2008 to stimulate the economy and create jobs.
Progress of all 1,521 projects included in the plan can be tracked on the Governor’s Web site at www.hawaii.gov/cip
