Layna Christian has a “Dennis Onishi for Council” shirt (Lorna Santos arranged to have one delivered to the Global Village site, recently). And yes, Layna, Dennis was elected to one of the nine seats on the Big Island.
Layna said she played for the Piopio Bears where Dennis coached, but is now going to Kapa‘a High School. Her sister Krystal had a great game during the Friday night JV matchup where Kapa‘a came from a deficit as high as 12 points to end up winning the squeaker.
Gary Maguire, you missed a great game — the varsity contest was also a squeaker and kudos to coach Terry and coach Erin!
So, if Dennis Onishi is on the Big Island council, does this mean we get no visits from the Piopio Bears? Bobby Kamakele (he was at the game Friday night) is trying to plan out his Memorial Day weekend when Karen and Steven Matsumoto usually coordinate a basketball tournament.
Former UH Hilo basketball coach Jimmy Yagi (no Linda Lopez or Bill O’Rear this trip) had a great kickoff for the county’s 13-and-under season that starts this evening in Kalaheo.
Coaches Sean Andrade and Clyde Vito were both at the free Saturday clinic that Aaron Uyeda said would not be possible without the help of Leesha Kawamura of Hawaiian Air and Louie Abrams who always finds coach Yagi a place to stay.
OK — time to check out the Papalina, G-Unit, Hanakila, Hauila, Westside and Central teams in Kalaheo!
