HA‘ENA — A 35-year-old female visitor who was ill and unable to hike out of Kalalau Valley on her own was airlifted out Thursday afternoon, a county news release states.
She is currently in stable condition at Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital.
The woman and her husband had been camping in Kalalau for 10 days and became ill after drinking stream water.
The husband escorted his wife to the helicopter landing zone in the valley and then hiked some 11 miles to the trailhead.
He called police dispatch at around 2:07 p.m. and reported that his wife was sick and needed assistance getting out of the valley.
Air-1 and two rescue specialists from the Lihu‘e fire station responded to the call.
They picked up the woman at the landing zone and brought her to the Waimea Canyon School park. From there, firefighters from the Waimea station escorted her to Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital, according to the release.
