LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i High School girls soccer team earned the No. 2 seed when the 2009 JN Automotive Girls Soccer Championships open Wednesday on O‘ahu.
Matt Victor, the head coach of the reigning Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation champions, said he had a conversation with Ross Shimabukuro, the Kaua‘i High School athletic director, Sunday, who informed him the team was seeded No. 2 for Division II of the state girls soccer championship.
With the second seed, Victor said the Red Raider girls will draw a bye on the opening round, Wednesday, and will play its first game Thursday starting at 3 p.m. at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park.
Victor said they are scheduled to play the winner of the No. 6 and No. 11 seeded teams, but after checking with the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Web site, does not know which teams are involved.
Kapa‘a High School, finishing No. 2 in the KIF, will also be participating in the Division II competition at the state championships, and calls to its head coach, Colby Ayonon, were unsuccessful by press time.
However, without being one of the top four seeds, Kapa‘a girls will, in all probability, be on the field in Waipio on Wednesday.
Victor said Kailua, the O‘ahu Interscholastic Federation champion, got the No. 1 seed for Division II, Pac 5 got the No. 3 seed and Kamehameha-Big Island received the No. 4 seed.
All four seeds enjoy a bye on Wednesday.
