Varsity girls: Kaua‘i 1, Kapa‘a 1
KAPA‘A — The Kaua‘i High School girls soccer team finished the regular season undefeated, despite its 1-1 with Kapa‘a High School yesterday at the Kapa‘a Town Park. The Lady Red Raiders, who clinched the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation championship earlier in the season, and the Lady Warriors both will head to O‘ahu for the JN Automotive/Hawai‘i High School Association Girls State Championships.
Kaua‘i (7-0-1) will receive the automatic tournament bid and Kapa‘a (4-3-1) will play in the play-in qualifying game vying for a its spot in the tournament.
Kapa‘a scored first with a goal from Zari Fernandez. Fernandez got the quick shot off when Kaua‘i starting goalkeeper Jessica Iwata slapped out a shot from Larissa Crain and planted in front of her. Kapa‘a held the lead for several the majority of the first half and Kapa‘a keeper Kyah Schneider had five saves before Kaua‘i was able to score.
Skye Shimabukuro tied the game in the 30th minute off an back-footed assist from Ashlyn Ubongen.
Yesterday’s game, although the final of the regular season, was still very physical.
Four yellow cards were issued for rough play or misconduct.
This tie game ends an eight-game Kaua‘i winning streak which goes back to the Raiders’ third place finish at the state tournament.
According to the latest HHSAA winter representation report, the KIF will have two girls soccer teams sent for the tournament. Kapa‘a will play in the pre-tournament game and the winner will earn a spot in the actual tournament which starts on Feb. 4. This is the same route Kaua‘i had to take last year when it finished third.
Varsity boys: Kapa‘a 6, Kaua‘i 2
Kapa‘a’s boys team finished undefeated yesterday with its 6-2 victory over Kaua‘i. Kapa‘a (7-0-1) was up 3-0 midway through the first half and Kaua‘i got a huge save from Howie Feller. Feller blocked a shot by Kaisen Carrillo, but the ball floated backward instead of forward.
Diving head first, Feller slapped the ball away before it could cross the plane and in the process, collided with a teammate and slammed right into the nearside post.
Feller would leave for the rest of the match and was replaced by the team’s original starting goalkeeper, Colsen Fernandez. Feller had five stops.
Ikaika Fuerte scored two for the Warriors. Ekolu Yam, Caleb Sarsona, Tyler Cram and Josh Gerhart added a goal apiece.
The boys state championship tournament is scheduled to start on Feb. 11. The KIF will only send one boys team to it.
Junior Varsity boys:
Kapa‘a 1, Kaua‘i 0
Kapa‘a’s junior varsity boys finished the season with a 1-0 win over Kaua‘i with a goal from Zaimana Fernandez.
Junior varsity girls:
Kapa‘a 2, Kaua‘i 0
Lily Frederickson and Laurie Tamayo led the Kapa‘a girls junior varsity soccer team to a 2-0 finish over Kaua‘i.
