Kaua‘i High School graduate Jamilee Jimenez finished fifth with a 5.27-meter leap in the Women Long Jump Invitational at the Lumberjack Invitational Saturday, hosted by the University of Northern Arizona at J. Lawrence Walkup Skydome.
Additionally, Jimenez, competing with the University of Hawai‘i, qualified for the Women 60 Meter Dash by bettering her seeded time of 8.21 with a qualifying 7.93 run. However, she fell short in the finals of that event, finishing 7.99 for 14th place overall.
The University of Hawai‘i women’s track and field team opened its 2009 indoor season at the Arizona track meet and was highlighted with a number of Top 10 finishes.
Hawai‘i senior Emily Sheppard leaped 5-9.75 (1.77 meter) to lead the jumpers to a No. 2, 3, 4 finish in the high jump event. Freshman Sarah Saddleton, competing in her first collegiate event, finished third at 5-7.75 (1.72 meter) followed by Annett Wichmann in fourth (5-5.75/1.67 m).
Wichmann also finished third in the Shot Put with a heave of 44-8.75 (13.63 m). In that same competition, Hawai‘i sophomore Careena Onosai finished 10th with a mark of 39-5.25 (12.02 m).
Two Rainbow Wahine posted Top 10 finishes in the weight throw. Sophomore Anika Borden took third on a throw of 54-4 (16.56 m) while Emma MacCorquodale was 10th at 46-11.75 (14.32 m).
Hawai‘i junior Jessica Custance tied for second in the pole vault after clearing 12-5.5 (3.80 m).
In the running events, Sam Whitehall was fifth in the 800-meter (2:27.93) while Tava Tedesco finished sixth in the mile (5:42.21).
Hawai‘i will next host the first of six Sunset Series meets on Jan. 24. The Sunset Meet No. 1 will take place at the Clarence T.C. Ching Complex.
