PUHI — Before the first splash, there were going to be records set at the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation qualifying swim meet Saturday.
But following the meet, not only were pool records set for the new YMCA pool, more KIF records fell, some being set as recently as last week, as the wahine swimmers continued to achieve state times.
Three auto qualifying times and eight consideration times emerged following the outing in the new pool, hosted by Kaua‘i High School.
Tori Kobayashi, Sinead Sims, Desiree Pia and Casie Ford opened the meet with a bang, the members of the Kaua‘i High School Girls 200 Yard Medley Relay team taking first place on a 2:04.89 swim and getting a consideration time (2:10.49). That swim is less than two seconds off the auto qualifying standard of 2:03.09.
As if a primer for her event, Ford, securing a consideration time of 2:08.22 last week, the senior from Kaua‘i High School secured an auto time in the Girls 200 Yard Freestyle event, beating the KIF record she set last week with her 2:07.01 swim in the rain squall.
Emma Rause, a sophomore from Kapa‘a, finished in 2:08.12, bettering her seeded time of 2:14.19 by almost six seconds and earning a consideration time with her second place finish in the event.
A pair of Kapa‘a freshmen, Anya Littlefield and Ryann Linthicum both secured auto state times and broke a KIF record with their respective No.1 and 2 finish in the Girls 500 Yard Freestyle event.
Littlefield stopped the clock at 5:30.87 followed by Linthicum at 5:45.64, making the state standard of 5:45.99. The pair broke a KIF record set on Feb. 10, 2007, by Meaghan Sims of Kaua‘i High School who set the KIF standard on a 6:08.55 swim.
Littlefield and Pia earned consideration times in the Girls 200 Yard Individual Medley event with swims of 2:24.80 and 2:27.40, respectively for the No. 1 and 2 spots.
In that swim, Littlefield bettered the KIF record of 2:24.99 set last week by Rausch, and is less than a second short of an auto time (2:24.09).
Pia broke her own record set last week by a 1:05.02 swim in the Girls 100 Yard Butterfly.
That earned her a consideration time and pulls her closer to the auto qualifying standard of 1:04.99.
Littlefield, Tania Rames, Sarah Faraola and Rausch made up the Kapa‘a Girls 200 Yard Freestyle Relay team that finished first with a 1:50.64 consideration time (1:55.79). The top finish by the Warrior wahine team is less than two seconds off the auto state time of 1:48.99.
That same team went on to get a consideration time and break a KIF record set on Jan. 27, 2007, in the Girls 400 Yard Freestyle Relay.
Kapa‘a’s team was joined by the Kaua‘i team of Kobayashi, Linthicum, Brittany Maldanado and Ford in securing consideration times in its first and second place finishes, respectively.
Kapa‘a stopped the clock at 4:03.75 followed by Kaua‘i at 4:05.30, both times shattering the KIF record (4:13.91) set in 2007 by the Kaua‘i High School team of M. Tausend, C. Ford, T. Lamay and M. Sims.
This Saturday’s KIF qualifying meet moves to the Kapa‘a pool hosted by the Warriors and starting at 10 a.m.
