Let fairness prevail
My son attended three public schools on Kaua‘i, grades 1 through 12. In those years he associated directly with 50 teachers, 15 administrators/counselors, 60 state personnel including cafeteria workers, custodians, office workers, teacher aides, three librarians, three PCNCs, three health aides, and various state employees who also worked at the schools.
That’s over 134 state employees. Included are all the other teachers and A-plus personnel who work on the campuses.
Through out my son’s academic career, I felt confident that he was safe at all three schools. In over 12 years, there was never any evidence to remotely suggest that drug-induced teachers or drug-raging state employees on campus would try to influence or harm any student.
Let fairness prevail: All state employees from legislative to health care to education to public safety could follow the same guidelines.
If one organization has to pay for their own drug testing, all state employees will pay for their own drug testing. Gov. Lingle can lead by example.

Obama not a role model for good health
Obesity, as noted in Morton Kondracke’s New Year’s Day column (“‘Hunk’ Obama can help nation fight obesity epidemic,” Forum, Jan. 1), is a national problem.
However, is “hunk” Barack Obama the example of achievement we should follow as noted in the commentary?
By his own admission, Obama experimented with drugs of abuse for approximately seven years. Those drugs likely included amphetamines, cocaine and marijuana, among others.
Most of the drugs that are abused are recognized as appetite suppressors. Obama has smoked tobacco for many years. Cigarettes are considered appetite suppressors.
One’s food cravings can be conquered through “chemistry” and most folks could maintain a slim and trim profile under the Obama chemically induced lifestyle.
To establish Obama as a role model for staying fit is to encourage smoking cigarettes regularly. Be informed before you exercise your freedom of choice about how to live a healthy lifestyle.

And the charade continues
The United States has blocked the U.N. Security Council resolution requiring immediate cease-fire in the Gaza Strip conflict between the Palestinian people and Israel.
This was our deliberate action to allow further bloodshed and prevent saving innocent lives. The reason the U.S. delegates gave was that the Palestinians would not adhere to the cease-fire.
The American diplomats also stated their unwillingness to consider redrafting and modification of the proposed resolution, saying that it would bring no credit to the council.
Please, don’t ever tell me that the American government is a peace-loving body when it deliberately takes away the chance of peace in an area of conflict, thus supporting an outrageous action of “centimation” (killing 100 Palestinians for every Israeli killed).
Their representatives also have the face to tell the other delegates of the council that the Palestinians cannot be trusted? Why should any other nation trust the word of Americans after our hypocritical democracy-bringing invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan?
OK, you wise American diplomats — you can see the future and you know better what the Palestinians would or would not do, better than the other Security Council members who were supporting the cease-fire resolution.
How come, with your superman-vision and state-of-the-art satellites, could you not locate where the Palestinian rockets came from?
Are there enough peace-loving Americans left who can stop their government and order their representatives to do what the people want? Or did they become the minority by succumbing to those who are quiet, nodding on their couches, sending out a few e-mails, and continuing to support the unjust wars around the world that the United States is involved in with their taxes and consenting silence?
As it appears, this government has forgotten about the once proposed Road Map for Peace, because the almighty records seem to be more important. The records of vetoing every U.N. Security Council resolution that would not fully support Israel’s actions, because, of course, Israel cannot do anything wrong.
So, the charade continues. So does the killing of innocent civilians, but the doors are open to a few more billions of dollars in foreign aid to Israel, in military hardware, of course, to maintain good American traditions.
